  8. Author’s Purpose • Authors write stories and articles for many different reasons. • An author may write to persuade, inform, entertain, or express ideas or feelings. • If you can identify a story’s structure it will be easier to determine the author’s purpose.

  9. Vocabulary Words • Study your words and their definitions each day.

  10. bargain • An agreement to trade or exchange; deal • Would you be getting a bargain if you bought 100 pencils for $1.00? • Have you ever found a great bargain? • What is a synonym for bargain? • Who can make a sentence?

  19. Context Clues • Sometimes when you are reading, you will come across a words that you do not know. • The author may give you a synonym for the word.

  20. Using Context Clues: Synonyms • Look at the sentence with the unknown word. • Look for a synonym in the sentence and in the surrounding sentences. • Try the synonym in place of the unknown word in the sentence. • Does it make sense???

  21. Sequence • The order in which the events happen. • Can you retell the story in your own words, in the CORRECT ORDER in which it happened? • What happened 1st, 2nd, last?

  28. Labels • Labels also use text to provide information about an illustration or picture. • They can appear inside, above, or below an image. • Always read labels.
