  5. The Burnett Honors College Undergraduate Research Programs • Honors in the Major • SMART

  6. Honors in the Major • Students research and write an undergraduate thesis to serve as the capstone project of their college career. • This thesis conforms to university standards, is defended at an public oral defense, and is bound and archived in the UCF library.

  7. Requirements for admission: • Junior or senior standing with at least 12 credit hours of upper-division courses graded. • 3.5 GPA in the major. • 3.2 GPA in all upper-division coursework. Please note: GPAs are not rounded and these GPAs must be maintained at time of graduation.

  8. Program requirements • Completion of a minimum of 3 hours of Honors Directed Readings (4903H/4904H) • Completion of a minimum of 3 hours of Honors Thesis (4970H) • Attendance at one Format Workshop • Successful oral defense and approval of thesis • Other requirements are discussed in the Honors in the Major Handbook.

  9. Thesis committee • Minimum of three members • Thesis Committee Chair and one additional member from your major department. • One additional member from outside your major department. • All three required members must be tenured or tenure earning at UCF (except for students resident at regional campuses).

  10. Honors in the Major scholarships • $1,000.00 non-renewable scholarships are available for HIM students. • Apply directly to your college, except • Regional campus students apply to their campus.

  11. SMART (Student-Mentor Academic Research Teams) • Provide undergraduate students with a first exposure to research • Allow undergraduate students to develop research skills and gain experience • Facilitate a close mentor/protégé relationship between faculty and students.

  12. Program requirements • Sophomore or first-semester junior status • A desire to learn about research

Things to do to participate in SMART • Review website for research opportunities • Meet with faculty who have listed projects you find interesting • Apply for a SMART grant (if desired) • Notify Burnett Honors College of your participation in SMART Note: Students and faculty who want to work together may identify each other and participate in SMART.

  14. SMART Grants • Up to 10 awards will be made. • $1,000.00 will be awarded to student and another $1,000.00 to faculty. • Application deadline is October 20, 2003. Application must be received at Office of Undergraduate Research at BHC by that date (postmark not sufficient).

  15. SMART Program notes • All students participating in research through SMART are considered to be participating, whether funded or not. • Funded students must enroll for 3 hours of Directed Independent Research (4912) in either the Spring or Summer semester following the awarding of the SMART grant. • Funded students must produce some sort of work product in the Spring or Summer semester.

  16. Maximizing your UG research experience • Use your SMART faculty mentor or HIM thesis committee members as a resource • Graduate assistants are a resource too • Network with other UG assistants • Take notes • Read on your own • Come to meetings prepared • Don’t hesitate to ask questions
