Advantages of Telehealth Nursing • Helped to make doctor’s offices and medical facilities as close to one another as the nearest computer screen. • Can be used in the remotest parts of the world or in places as close as a correctional facility, helping to eliminate the dangers and costs associated with the transportation of prisoners to a medical center • Allows a nurse to be in 2 places at once. • Allows homebound to receive treatment.

  3. Disadvantages • Technological problems. Telephone lines and rural areas not having cable. • The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) have placed restrictions on the amount given in reimbursements for telemedicine procedures, and many private insurance companies will not reimburse at all for this technology. • Many states wont allow out-of-state nurses to practice unless they are licensed in that state. • Underlying fears of malpractice suits for nurses engaged in telehealth nursing because there is a lack of hands-on interaction with patients.

  4. Ethical and legal issues Security, privacy and confidentiality, in telemedicine consultation, are the concerned Ethical Issues. • Safety of Clinical data • Confidentiality issues • Accountability • Malpractice • Soft wares used in telehealth system is regulated by FDA

Ethical/Legal Issues • Advocate for safe and effective use of telehealth technology. • Serve as well informed resources for consumers and technology developers for the safe use of technology to meet healthcare needs. • Monitor outcomes of care resulting from telehealth nursing practice. • Ensure confidentiality and patient privacy in all telehealth encounters.

Informatics competencies required for nurses • Nurses are expected to provide safe, competent, and compassionate care in an increasingly technical and digital environment • Nurses should be skilled in the analysis, design, and implementation of information systems that support . • Nurses should also have basic Computer competencies ,information literacy and information management skills.

  7. Functions And Responsibilities of the Informatics Nurse Telehealth nurses are committed to: 1. Leveraging technology and nursing expertise to provide quality nursing care, to delivering nursing expertise to those who need care, and to improving health and patients’ outcomes. 2. appropriate, effective, proficient, and safe use of telehealth technologies/medical devices 3. Enhanced communication skills 4. Adhere to existing regulations of the jurisdiction in which they practice, including licensure and regulatory requirements.

  8. Telehealth professionals and their roles • Nurses-identifying patients appropriate for monitoring, reviewing data, triaging of patients. • Physicians-make decision on necessary care, medication and other services. • Case Managers-obtain and organize accurate information and make decisions. • Technical support personnel- Delivering ,setting up, maintaining and recovering equipment, Educating patients on the use of technology, troubleshooting problems associated with hardware and software and recalibrating equipment.

Telehealth Users • Chronic disease patients-These patients are highly benefit from home telemonitoring • At-risk populations-Telemonitoring can be used effectively on patients who are at risk for an episode of acute illness. • Isolated patients- Effective for patients who cannot physically access healthcare services. • Emergency Response Situations-Major disasters, large scale nuclear/biochemical attack, outbreak of highly infectious disease. • Concerned Patients and families-Terminally ill patients and their families • Assisted living/Sub acute patients-kiosk can be used to obtain vital signs for large groups of people.

  10. Who is using home telemonitoring • Home health agencies • Hospital and health system • Payor Organizations • Long-term care facilities • Families and patients • Employers/wellness programs

  11. Summary • Telemedicine is a growing new way of medicine that may be the new way of the future. It brings medical offices, Doctors, specialists and nurses that may be oceans apart together as if they were in the same facility. It allows homebound to get medical treatment. It allows a surgeon or a nurse to be in two places at once. • There are many advantages and disadvantages to telemedicine. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages and the disadvantages will soon be resolved. Telemedicine is the way of the future!
