  1. Making GeneralizationsUsing Context Clues Using what you read & What you already know

  2. When you read, you may see ideas about groups of people, animals, or things.

  3. What you read & what you already know helps you to make a general statement about a group. This is called a: Generalization.

  4. What is a generalization? • A generalization is a statement that can be made about a group of people or things that have something in common. • For example, we can make a generalization that people who eat at McDonald’s generally like their food.

  5. For example… • Consider this • Everyone loves chocolate • It would be easy to prove that there are some people who do not like chocolate. Raise your hand if you like chocolate!

  6. Let’s make some generalizations! • My best friend is my dog Maleia. The minute I get home from work she is waiting and ready to greet me with wet sloppy kisses. When there is no one else to play with, I can count on Maleia to play with me. • What generalizations can we make?

  7. Key Words • Sometimes • Always • Never • Most • Many • All • Generally

  8. Making generalizations Think about the group you are reading about. How are they alike OR mostly alike? OR What do they have in common?

  9. Why make generalizations? Generalizations are important because they help us to understand more about what we read.

  10. Let’s Practice…. Read the following passage. Think about the things that are being talked about. Ask yourself: How are they alike or mostly alike? OR What do they have in common?

  11. Ants are one of the most widespread insects in the world. Ants are called social insects because they live in colonies made up of other ants. A colony may have a few dozen or several million ants living in it. Ants in a colony are divided into different groups. Worker ants look for food and take care of the young. Soldier ants defend the nest from invaders. The queen ant lays eggs. These are the three main groups in a ant colony.

  12. What generalization can you make about ants based upon your reading? 1. All ants live in large colonies. 2. All ants work to defend the colony. 3. All ants in a colony have a job.
