  2. Psychology • Is the study of human behavior • 3 Things that make me who I am… Hereditary, Environment and Adaptation • Sigmund Freud- father of modern Psychology • Id • Ego • Superego

Needs • Needs are something you must have met in order to survive • Conscious needs- are needs that you are aware of • Examples- food, water, clothing, shelter and air • Unconscious needs are needs that you are not aware of • Examples- need to succeed, fear of failure, need to be the best, worry about what others think about you all the time

  6. Defense Mechanisms • The way you protect yourself from emotional harm • Projection • Repression • Denial • Rationalization • Displaced Aggression • Scapegoating • Identification

  7. Learning • Stimulus-anything that causes action (perception) • Response- way you react to a stimulus

  8. Perception and Learning • Perception- taking in and processing information through your senses • Mental Set- expectation of the way things should be. • Learning- change in behavior caused by experience • Experience Pattern- behavior pattern PERCEPTION THOUGHT ACTION REACTION

  9. Learning Model • Classical Conditioning (Pavlov’s Dog) (standard training developed by Pavlov) STIMULUS RESPONSE

  10. Learning Model continued • Operant Conditioning- B.F. Skinner’s Pigeons- gradually shaping behavior to what the trainer wants. • Reinforcement- Rewards or punishments • Trial and Error- trying different ways until one works.

  11. Conflict and Learning • To resolve a conflict, an individual must choose among several values, goals, or ways of behaving.

  15. Conflicts arise: • 1. Personal Limits • 2. Physical Environment • 3. Social Regulations- Laws (CONFLICT CAN BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL)

Resolving Conflicts • Approach/ Approach (Win/Win)- Both choices are good • Approach/ Avoid (Win/Lose)- One choice good, one bad • Avoid/ Avoid (Lose/Lose)- Both choices are bad (An individual uses his or her past experiences, reasoning and insight to solve problems) Must use abstract thinking- learning to put different things into the same category because they have something in common.
