  1. General Information on Gridded Models at ESRL Brian Jamison NOAA/ESRL/GSD

  2. Data Distribution Policy • GSD distributes only GSD-specific data • FIM, RUC, RAP, HRRR • Data from other sources are not distributed except in special cases approved by GSD senior staff

  3. NCEP GFS Model • Used to initialize FIM and RAP (and RUC?) • HRRR initialized from RAP • GFS assimilates data from • Surface & Buoy Observations • Radiosonde Observations (RAOBs) • Wind Profilers • Aircraft Observations • Radar & Satellite

  4. Data Used for Analysis • Aircraft (T,W,H,RH) • Rawinsonde, Dropsonde (T,P,DP,W,H) • Surface stations & Buoys (T,P,W,RH,Ceil,Vis) • Radar (VAD winds, Reflectivity) • Profiler & RASS (T,W) • Satellite (TPW, Cloud Top T, Vis & IR CDW) • Lightning • Other – Sodar, Tower (W)

  5. FIM (Flow-following finite-volume Icosahedral Model) • Global - Native resolution 30km, interpolated to 0.5 degree grid • Native vertical resolution 64 hybrid levels, interpolated to 42 isobaric levels. • Runs every 12 hours, forecasts to 180 hours

  6. RAP (Rapid Refresh) Model • North America and CONUS domain • 13km resolution • 49 native vertical levels • 39 isobaric levels • Runs hourly, forecasts to 18 hours

  7. HRRR Model • Initialized from RAP • Smaller CONUS domain • 3km resolution • Same vertical resolution as RAP • Runs hourly, forecasts to 15 hours

  8. What GSD Archives FIM 0.5 degree lat-lon grids from 30km and 15km RAP 13km CONUS and N. America grids RUC 13km CONUS grids, hourly 00-06,3-hourly 09-24 HRRR 3km CONUS grids, hourly
