  1. 5 Things You Didn't Know About 4B Hair Type 4B hair is the rarest of all the curl types, with only 5 percent of women having it. This hair type can be easily confused for 4A and 4C hair—the types directly next to it. However, there are some distinct differences between each type that make them unique. Type 4B Hair Is Coarse Type 4B hair is generally coarse and dense, much like other types of hair found in this family. The texture is also very tightly coiled, which means that it will hold its shape well once styled. It is also prone to frizzing if not properly cared for or treated with products that contain humectants and oils. Type 4B Hair Is Very Rare While there may seem to be an abundance of women on Instagram with 4B curls, the truth is that only about five percent of black women have this type of hair texture naturally.

  2. The Curl Pattern Can Change Over Time The curl pattern of type 4b hair can change over time due to several factors including hormonal changes during pregnancy and age-related changes in your body's pH levels (which affect how your scalp produces sebum). However, some women find that using a sulfate-free shampoo can help keep their curls. It’s often mistaken as 4A or 4C. Both these textures have similar characteristics: their coils are closer together than 3A or 3C, but not as close as 2A or 2C. This means that they have less volume than the other two textures on either side, but more than 1A or 1B would have.

  3. There’s a lot of overlap between the three textures. The differences between each type of curl can be really subtle—especially when they’re compared side by side like this. Looking at each curl individually, however, shows how much variation there can be between one strand of hair and another from the same head of hair (or even from one part of the scalp!). Just look at how much difference there is in these two strands—one is clearly more tightly coiled.
