  1. pirata PIRATA (Pilot Research moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic) (1997-2006) International (tripartite) Programme (CLImatic VARiability) : - USA (NOAA/PMEL) - FRANCE (IRD, Météo-France) - BRESIL (INPE, DHN) In France : Label « Observatoire de Recherche en Environnement » (ORE) since January 2003 by Research Ministry (=> funding helps for three years) Successive « stages » : * 1997-2001 : « Pilote » period * 2001-2006 : Consolidation period * 2006-? : Perennisation?…

  2. Scientific Context: Study of Climate and its Variability in Tropical Atlantic

  3. LODYC ADCP Pacific: TAO - TRITON Atlantic: PIRATA

  4. Bouée ATLAS: Measured Parameters : Atmosphere: - wind (direction, speed) - relative humidity - air temperature - precipitation - incidente radiation Ocean: - temperature (11 levels from surface to 500m) - salinity (4 levels; 0,20,40,120m) - pressure (at 300 & 500m)

  5. Séries temporelles 1997-2004 Eq-10°W Eq-23°W Eq-0°E 10°S-10°W

  6. Retour des données pour chacune des bouées ATLAS du réseau PIRATA (septembre 1997 - mai 2003) SST : 2003: Température 2003: Salinité

  7. perene PERENE Experiment : (Pirata EuleRian Essential Network Evaluation) => Evaluation of the impact of Pirata data assimilation In OGCM models during 2003. (Yves du Penhoat, F.Hernandez, E.Greiner., LEGOS+CLS, Toulouse) PIRATA = Principal source of fixed points profiles, constitutes a indispensable complement to VOS networks, SVP et ARGO

  8. 1/3° Mercator Atlantic model and Forcing (ECMWF) • Daily forcing (no diurnal signal) : • Surface stress wind • Net downward radiative flux • Net downward heat flux • Net upward water evaporation-precipitation PSY1V2: 1/3° Atlantic 20°S-70°N • Daily forcing (no diurnal signal) : • Surface stress wind • Net downward radiative flux • Net downward heat flux • Net upward water evaporation-precipitation Relaxation to Reynolds SST No relaxation to Reynaud SSS climatology

  9. Model 7-d U forecast Model spin-up 1-d filtered U ADCP Assimilation of altimetry Assimilation of T and S of PIRATA moorings

  10. Very first conclusions • Period with no PIRATA shows an immediate impact on forecast, especially between 100-400m • Impact of Salinity assimilation is important • On year run: suggests a relative seasonal impact • NEXT: - (try to) define a strategy for future moorings or additional sensors on the actual PIRATA network - what is the relative impact of PIRATA compared to drifting ARGO floats in the tropical domain.

  12. Vessel time rare, difficult to get and expensive! => Important to « optimize » the cruises….. PIRATA FR12 CRUISE (Jan. 28– Feb. 20, 2004) Different operations in the framework of various programs: PIRATA (IRD -LEGOS-, CNRS, Météo-France) EGEE(Etude de la circulation dans le Golfe de Guinée)/AMMA (IRD -LEGOS-) DEEP EQUATORIAL JETS (CNRS -LPO & LODYC-) Tropical Atlantic Variability / CLIVAR Atl. (IFM-Kiel + NOAA/AOML-Miami) CHICO (Physique et CHImie COtière en Guyane) (IRD -ELISA- et CNRS) CORIOLIS / ARGO (IFREMER, CNRS, CNES, IRD, MF, SHOM, IPEV)

  13. 3 CHICO moorings 3 acoustic sources (IFM) 2 currentmeters moorings • => 12 « mooring » operations • + • 15 CTD (S, O2 and nutrients samplings) Pirata sites & 10°W • sea surface water samplings (every degree) for S, nutrients • sea surface water samplings in the GG for CO2, C13 & O18 • - deployment of 12 SVP buoys • - deployment of 115 XBT • - TSgraph, ADCP, nav & meteo • - Real time transmission of XBT and CTD profiles (Coriolis)

  14. 23°W - 0°N 10° W - 0°N PIRATA surface ADCP ADCP long-range IFM - Kiel Surface ADCP Lodyc Courantomètres Aandera espacés de 120 m sur la verticale entre 700 et 1600m Capteurs autonomes p,T intercalés entre les courantomètres Current moorings: • BAD NEWS and BIG PROBLEMS: • 10°W and 0°E / Equator ATLAS buoys already vandalized!!! (on May 8 and 15) • Vessel time problems in France … • => ? Next cruise for the site at 23°W-Equator?

  15. internet sites for visualization & recovering of data : http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/pirata/ (new version with plots «on demand ») http://www.brest.ird.fr/pirata/piratafr.html http://www4.cptec.inpe.br/pirata/ + http://www.funceme.br/: new PIRATA Web site at FUNCEME, Fortaleza, BR with original plots regularly updated from the available PIRATA daily data set and around 1300 original plots

  16. Important Next PIRATA “Scientific Committee” Meeting: PIRATA-10 in Fortaleza, Brazil 14-15-16 December 2004 (=> perennisation, SE and SW extensions, Pb of GG sites, etc. ?)
