  2. Focus Questions Why did Americans elect George Washington as their first president? What did Americans expect of their new government? What steps did Congress and the president take to organize the new government?

The First President George Washington did not want to be America’s first president but he was chosen for the role The electoral college chose Washington to be president on April 6, 1789 (John Adams was vice-president) Martha Washington was his wife and had to entertain guests and attend social events

  4. The First President Abigail Adams and many other women felt women should be educated These women believed in an idea of Republican Motherhood which stated that women played an important role because they taught children to be good citizens

  5. Life in the New Republic America had never been a united nation There were 4 million people in the United States in 1790 Most lived in a countryside and were farmers New York City was the first capital Many people felt that the lively city of New York showed the country’s potential

  6. Setting Precedents President Washington felt the young government had to set a precedent– an action or decision that serves as example for later generations Congress established several executive departments Each department was in-charge of their specialized national policy Washington chose Alexander Hamilton to be the secretary of treasury, Thomas Jefferson to be secretary of state, and Edmund Randolph to be Attorney General This group met to advise the president and became known as the cabinet

  7. Setting Precedents The Judiciary Act of 1789 created a three level federal court system The three levels were the district courts at the lowest levels, court appeals in the middle and the highest court was the Supreme Court John Jay became the first chief justice of the Supreme Court
