  2. The Mission • The Apollo 13 mission was to explore the Fra Mauro formation, a widespread hilly geological area.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration: NASA • NASA: An independent agency of the United States government responsible for aviation and spaceflight • Apollo 13 launched from the Kennedy Space Center on April 11, 1970. It was the third Apollo mission intended to land on the moon. It was successfully launched but the landing was aborted after an oxygen tank erupted.

  6. John L. Swigert • August 30, 1931 - December 27, 1982 • before NASA was a test pilot • was elected to the U.S. Congress, but died before being sworn in.

  7. Fred Haise • born November 14, 1933 • an engineer and former NASA astronaut • served as a U. S. Marine Corps fighter pilot.

  8. Complications • Two days into its journey to the moon, on 13th April 1970, Apollo 13 suffered an explosion caused by a wiring fault. • The mission was a successful failure, although the crew never walked on the moon at least they made it home alive!

Fun facts • Film Apollo13 was made about the mission in 1995 • The film stars Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton • The film grossed over $355 million worldwide • To prepare for their roles in the filmTom Hanks, Bill Paxton, and Kevin Bacon all attended the U.S, space camp in Huntsville Alabama. • The film is reasonably faithful to the facts of the mission but adds some tension between the astronauts for dramatic effect.
