  9. GML2IFC Version 1.0 2005-02-10 First draft. Version 1.1 2005-02-15 Second example illustrated. Version 1.2 2005-02-21 Attributes mapped. Version 1.3 2005-02-21 Surfaces mapped. The name of the tool is ‘gml2ifc.xslt’ It is a W3C XSLT transformation mapping GML to IFC XML GML version 2.00 and 3.00 are supported IFC2x2 XML release (8th February 2005) is generated The project has delivered a base mapping from GML to IFC format, not specifically reflecting the national feature schemas used in the two sample files. Two sample files have been used: • PortTalbot.gml (GML2: UK OS master map) • Kommune.gml (GML3: Norwegian mapping)

  10. GML with ground texture, IFG with properties

  11. Details Each GML feature is mapped to IfcBuildingElementProxy except where a simple test detecting ‘Buildings’/’Bygning’ text in the attributes indicates that an IfcBuilding is appropriate. Each feature is given a name and description derived from the GML feature name. All non-graphic attributes are mapped into an arbitrary property set called Pset_GML. The transformation addresses three types of GML geometry. • Point: These occur for features such as trees and also annotation points. A default symbol of a box (or cross) is used, using a mapped representation, located at the point. • LineString: These are used to represent contours, roads, rails and outlines etc. using a ‘GeometricCurveSet’. All linear features are instanced relative to the site origin.

  12. Issues in GML data • The Kommune data has five features with invalid point data, and these are mapped to become invalid IFC elements. • The Port Talbot data has 61 features where the same ‘theme’ property is defined more than once. This grouping mechanism would need more specific handling.

  13. Kommune.gml More specific mappings would depend on tailoring to specific feature schemas.
