  9. Supporting your IB student The focus of each year of school has been… • More student independence • Less parental involvement Page 9

  10. Supporting your IB student For the 2 years of IB we ask parents to • Become MORE involved! • Help keep them organized! • Continue to motivate them!

  11. Please focus on... • A REAL method of organization • Behaviours that will lead to success • Methods of study that are efficient • Prioritizing their time • Encouraging them to continue when they get discouraged

  12. How to deal with marks • IB is NOT the same old evaluation • Teachers will communicate how students can raise their IB scores in tests, assignments, other assessments • Students must figure out this NEW way of “scoring” • Final IB scores in a subject are NOT just a cumulative set of scores • We are working towards a “7” over the course of 2 years Page 12

  13. What if the marks are not what we expect • Compare first year university to first year IB • There needs to be an adjustment period • Students can continue to move higher in their scores as they continue with the IB programme • Are we seeing differences in their WAY they are doing things • We are DEVELOPING the attributes of the Learner Profile

  14. Healthy Habits Sleeping at Night (so they don’t sleep during class) Eating Healthy Foods Managing Stress by: • Following routines • Setting timelines that are reasonable • Controlling circumstances that are in their control

  15. Will all this work really pay off YES • More and more Canadian Universities are recognizing the IB Diploma as a step above • Dalhousie University, University of Saskatchewan • Students will have a more flexible university course load (advanced standing credits) • Students will be better prepared to deal with the stress of university • We hear anecdotal evidence of IB students doing more and being given more opportunities while at university
