It becomes part of the __ systems that are drained from larger areas called ____. Water that gets absorbed into the ground will go into ____. Rivers that have ___ on them lead to manmade ____ which help supply us with water.

  2. Agenda: • Warm-up • Web search – watershed fun! • Watershed Assessment and Restoration Plan • Exit Slip HW = Boots Tom!! Famous at Envirothon!

  3. Website #1: by clicking on each section, zoom in as close as possible and record the 8-digit # that includes our Loyalhanna Creek Website #2: Answer the following 1. What association does our town have? 2. Who is our local watershed specialist? 3. Use map to name 3 major watersheds in our county… not your own! Go back to top and click on “central” under Conservation Project Descriptions by Area in Westmoreland County 1. Describe in 2-3 sentences the project in Latrobe 2. What 4 services do they provide to our local community in the form of education and outreach?

  4. Exit Slip: T/F? • Resevoirs are manmade. • Aquifers are always made from dams. • Aquifers are underground. • River systems and watersheds are the same thing. • Runoff accumulates in groundwater. • Point-source pollution can be caused by oil spills. • Our watershed extends outside of Westmoreland County.

  5. May-June

  6. Capstone Water quality testing Bat boxes ORDER: Colorimeters (3) More chem pillows Squirt bottles for testing shovels

  7. Water Quality Testing • Visual assessments • Biological assessments • Aquatic macroinvertebrate sampling • Electro-shock fishing • Chemical assessments • Nitrates = • Aluminum • Iron • Turbidity = Both indicate

  8. Chemical assessments (water chemistry) • Colorimeter – measures the absorbance of particular wavelengths of light through a solution • Absorbance = Concentration • $700 • Precise and sensitive • Protocol is VERY important 3 teams of 4, 5, and 5 1. Practice protocol for testing samples 2. Check the accuracy of all 3 colorimeters

  9. Groups Zane, Heidi, Ben, Connor PJ, Nick, Alec, Dakota, Bert Cody, Colton, Carly, Alyssa, Shelby
