Important Facts/Statistics • Women are most affected by feminism • At least 70% of women do not consider themselves feminists • Continuous support for feminist beliefs make women feel less attractive • Social media sources convey feminists as homosexuals • In 2007, most women thought than feminism was unnecessary • “The risk for standing up for our beliefs feels all too real." -Emma Cosh

Incident Description • Nov. 2004: Egypt ensures women’s equal right to divorce • Egyptian women have had the option of filing for no-fault divorce (khula) since 2000 • Women who want a divorce in Egypt have two options: fault-based or no-fault divorce • May Ibrahim (not her real name)- woman who seeks divorce because of alcoholic husband and harassment towards her • Rania Omar- wants divorce because of abusive husband

Cause of Incident • Egyptian government failed to handle ongoing discrimination against women • Attempt to ensure equal divorce rights discourages women from leaving their abusive marriages • Government decisions leave women with little decision during trial • Men have more protection than women in divorce cases • Control most steps of the divorcing process

Results of Incident • Divorces financially and emotionally devastate women in the end • Women do not have the full benefit of having a khula instead of a normal divorce • Egyptian government tried to stop the discrimination that prevents women from seeking divorce • Women can be divorced and not have to assume that their husbands will harm them
