  2. Notes Mental Math Links Activity Proficiency Homework Fact Test

  3. Mental Math • Count by 12’s from 12 to 144 • 8 x 425 465 + 250 • 150 + 49 $9.75 - $3.50 • Double 4 ½ 600/30 • 2 x 2, x 2, x 2, x 2, x 2, ÷ 8, ÷ 8

  4. Step 1: Put the problem into the correct shape or form if it is not already. (When adding and subtracting, the correct form is with common denominators). Step 2: Perform the operation indicated. (Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, or Dividing). Step 3: Simplify the answer if possible. (Reduce the fraction or write an improper fraction as a mixed number).

  5. Example #1 Add: 1/2 + 2/3 Step 1: Shape: write the fraction with common denominators. 1/2 = n/6 = 3/6 + 2/3 = + n/6 = + 4/6 Step 2: Operate: add the renamed fractions. 3/6 + 4/6 7/6 Step 3: Simplify: convert the improper fraction to a mixed number 7/6 = 1 1/6 Next

  6. Example #2 Subtract: 5/6 - 1/3 Step 1: Shape: write the fraction with common denominators. 5/6 = n/6 = 5/6 - 1/3 = - n/6 = - 2/6 Step 2: Operate: add the renamed fractions. 5/6 - 2/6 3/6 Step 3: Simplify: convert the improper fraction to a mixed number 3/6 = 1/2
