Higher Education Academy : Teaching Development Grant 2012 / 2013 • Who are the Higher Education Academy? • “The Higher Education Academy champions excellent learning and teaching in higher education. We are a national and independent organisation, funded by the four UK HE funding bodies and by subscriptions and grants. Our mission, as stated in our Strategic Plan 2012-2016, is to use our expertise and resources to support the higher education community in order to enhance the quality and impact of learning and teaching. We do this by recognising and rewarding excellent teaching, bringing together people and resources to research and share best practice, and by helping to influence, shape and implement policy.” (HEA Website ‘About Us’, 2012)

Higher Education Academy : Teaching Development Grant 2012 / 2013 • What is this funding for? • Over the next year there will be a total of £1.5 million of funding available for individual grants, departmental grants and collaborative grants. This bid-based development grant funding exists to stimulate evidence-based research and encourage innovations in learning and teaching that have the potential for sector-wide impact. • What does the funding pay for?

  4. Higher Education Academy : Teaching Development Grant 2012 / 2013 • What is this specific project? • “Legal Education – academic or practical? The use of flexible learning to compare third year undergraduate students observing professional practice with those learning in a traditional academic setting.” • Project Proposal • Signed off and agreed by Project Leader, HEA, Head of Business School & Innovation and Research Office. Visits sanctioned centrally by Scottish Courts.

Higher Education Academy : Teaching Development Grant 2012 / 2013 • Court Visits • Two cohorts (Hamilton and Paisley), each with six students • Initial Court Visit • Date TBC but likely one of the following: • Hamilton – Tuesday 23rd October @ 9am / 10am orThursday 25th October @ 1pm / 2pm • Paisley– Monday 29th October @ 9am / 10am orTuesday 30th October @ 9am / 10am / 1pm / 2pm

Higher Education Academy : Teaching Development Grant 2012 / 2013 • Additional Court Visits • Five additional visits with provided folder and questions based on subject areas chosen. • Dates TBC but based on student schedule so likely: • Hamilton: Tuesday 10-12, Thursday 2-4 or Friday 10-12 • Paisley: Monday 10-12, Tuesday 10-12 or Friday 2-4
