Remnants of Peter’s home in Capernaum Today’s Text: Luke 4:38-44 (Please read if you have not done so.)

4:38-44 October 13, 2013

“Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon.” (Luke 4:38a) “She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, ‘Because the Lord heard that I am not loved, he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.’” (Genesis 29:33) שִׁמְעוֹן (Shim`own) – “Simeon” • “heard” • Hebrew equivalent of Greek “Simon” (sea-moan) 4:38 - 44 JHK

“Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon.” (Luke 4:38a) “As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.” (Mark 1:29) 4:38 - 44 JHK

Peter’s home was a small, single structure.

“Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon.” Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.” (Luke 4:38) “Don’t we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Peter?” (I Corinthians 9:5) 4:38 - 44 JHK

“Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon.” Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.” (Luke 4:38) ἐρωτάω (erotao) – “asked” • to request, entreat, beg, beseech. (a request of God (Jesus) is indicative of faith.) 4:38 - 44 JHK

“So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.” (Luke 4:39) “So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.” (Mark 1:31) “He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.” (Matthew 8:15) 4:38 - 44 JHK

She got up at once and began to wait on them.” (Luke 4:39) ἐπιτιμάω (epitimao) – “rebuked” • to admonish or charge sharply. “And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm.” (Luke 8:24) “Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” (Luke 4:35) 4:38 - 44 JHK

“So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.” (Luke 4:39) And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (Genesis 1:3) “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. Characteristics of Jesus’ Healing • He healed with a word or a touch or both. • He healed instantly. • He healed completely. • He healed everybody. “…and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.” (Luke 4:40b) 4:38 - 44 JHK

As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him - and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?” (Luke 17:12-17) 4:38 - 44 JHK

Characteristics of Jesus’ Healing • • He healed with a word or a touch or both. • • He healed instantly. • • He healed completely. • • He healed everybody. • • He healed everything. “At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness…” (Luke 4:40a) 4:38 - 44 JHK

“As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.” (Mark 1:29) “So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.” (Luke 5:11) “Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, ‘We have found the Messiah.’ And he brought him to Jesus.” (John 1:40-42a) 4:38 - 44 JHK

“Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.” (Luke 4:41) 4:38 - 44 JHK

“At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place.” (Luke 4:42a) “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” (Mark 1:35) 4:38 - 44 JHK

“At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place.” (Luke 4:42a) ἔρημος(eremos) – “solitary place” • a desert, wilderness. • uninhabited region. • an uncultivated region fit for pasturage. 4:38 - 44 JHK

“The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.” (Luke 4:42b) Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” (Mark 1:36-37) 4:38 - 44 JHK

But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” (Luke 4:43) ἀποστέλλω(apostello) – “sent” • to order one to go to an appointed place. • apostle. 4:38 - 44 JHK

“And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.” (Luke 4:44 - NIV) “And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.” (Luke 4:44 – KJV) “And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.” (Luke 4:44 – RSV) “So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.” (Mark 1:39 – NIV) 4:38 - 44 JHK

Characteristics of Jesus’ Lifestyle • He gave Himself completely to His ministry. In one day… …He preached in the synagogue. …He cast out a demon in the synagogue. …He healed Simon’s mother-in-law. …He healed everyone who came to Simon’s house. …He cast out demons from many people. 4:38 - 44 JHK

Characteristics of Jesus’ Lifestyle • He gave Himself completely to His ministry. • He needed solitude to rest and recover. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” (Luke 8:44-46) 4:38 - 44 JHK
