  1. Oct. 4 ,2010 Forms of Energy

  2. Starters • 10/4/10 (3rd box) • Describe the shoes you are wearing today. • Use 5 Quantitative and 5 Qualitative observations. • This can be a list not a sentence.

  3. What is Energy? • http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidassetid=ed3c0bad-dffc-4530-80bb-198aad55b4b9# • Discovery video, Forms of energy • Discoveryeducation.com • Middle school science • Energy sources • Human use of energy • Watch • Different types of energy 6:01

  4. Two Energy Forms • Potential • Potential energy stored and the energy of position. • Potential means capable of being or becoming or possible. • Kinetic • Kinetic energy is motion, the motion of waves, electrons, atoms, molecules and substances. • Kinetic means • adjective 1.pertaining to motion.2.caused by motion.3.characterized by movement: Running and dancing are kinetic activities.

  5. Types of Potential Energy • Chemical • Nuclear • Stored Mechanical • Gravitational

  6. Chemical Energy is Potential Energy • Chemical Energy: Stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules. Examples: • Biomass

  7. Natural Gas Petroleum Chemical Energy Examples Continued

  8. Propane Coal Chemical Energy Examples Continued

  9. Nuclear Energy is Potential Energy • Nuclear energy is the energy stored in the nucleus of an atom – the energy that holds the nucleus together. • Examples are • Uranium Atom

  10. Fusion – The Sun is a process in which two nuclei join, forming a larger nucleus and releasing energy. Nuclear Fission – splitting the atom

  11. Stored Mechanical Energyis Potential Energy • Stored Mechanical Energy is energy stored in objects by the application of a force. • Examples are springs and Rubber bands

  12. Gravitational Energy is Potential Energy • Gravitational Energy is the energy of Place or position. • Examples are Water behind a Dam, when released it becomes energy of motion.

  13. Types of Kinetic Energy (Motion) • Radiant • Thermal • Motion • Sound • Electrical Energy

  14. Radiant Energy is Kinetic Energy • Electromagnetic energy that travels in transverse waves. Solar energy, x-rays & gamma rays are examples.

  15. Thermal Energy is Kinetic Energy • Thermal energy or heat is the internal energy in substances – the vibration and movement of atoms and molecules within substances. • Geysers are an example.

  16. One Benefit of Geothermal Energy

  17. Motionis Kinetic Energy • The movement of objects or substances from one place to another. Wind and hydropower are two examples.

  18. Soundis Kinetic Energy • Sound is the movement of energy through substances in longitudinal waves.

  19. Electrical Energyis Kinetic Energy • Electrical energy is the movement of electrons. Lightning and electricity.

  20. POTENTIAL The Possibilities… KINETIC Motion Two Categories of Energy
