  8. Green buildings worldwide are certified with a voluntary, consensus-based rating system.

  9. Additional construction costs

  10. LEED - Leaders in Energy & Environmental Design • What’s new? • What’s improved?

  11. What’s new • New on-line document systems • New LEED AP web site and organization, Green Building Certification Institute • www.gbci.org • Waving registration cost for existing buildings

  12. LEED for schools • New rating system for Schools • Focused on K-12 • Recommended for Early Education, Daycare, and Higher Education facilities • April 20, 2007 release • Allows one point classroom product certified to Greenguard Children & Schools • www.buildgreenschools.org • Major focus of the rating system: • Daylight improves performance • Good indoor air quality improves health • Acoustics increases learning potential • Mold prevention decreases asthma incidence • Comfortable indoor temperatures increase occupant satisfaction

  13. LEED for healthcare • In partnership with Green Guide for Healthcare, GGHC • Designed for inpatient care, licensed outpatient and licensed long term care facilities • Public comment 11/16 - 12/15 • KI listed as an endorser • Release by mid 2008 by USGBC • www.gghc.org • Major focus of the Rating System • increased sensitivity to chemicals and pollutants • access to natural spaces

  14. LEED for homes • New rating system for homes • http://www.greenhomeguide.org/ • More focus • Energy conservation • Water conservation • Indoor air quality • This is increasing awareness even more so with laymen in your firms

  15. Role furniture plays • Recycled content • Construction waste management • Regional materials • Rapidly renewable materials • Certified wood • Indoor air quality • Daylight and views

  33. Future of walls • Reduction of the footprint • Reduction of landfill debris • Easy to build in transom glass • High content of recycled materials • Ease of recycling after life • Easy repair and change out • Control indoor air quality

  34. Being a Green Mentor • Know up front the environmental direction your project is taking • Know the tools available from KI to support the A&D request • Have a general understanding of LEED and the role furniture plays • Know the various rating systems and certification levels • Know the KI story • What we have done, what we are doing • Tools available • Who to contact, how to engage KI

  35. What is KI doing? The bigger picture • Addressing manufacturing • Process and materials • Continue to look at new materials • Recycling programs • Batteries, CPU’s, monitors • Cell phones, lamps & bulbs • Energy reduction • Greenhouse gas reductions • Greenguard for all major products • Look at other programs as awareness increases • Maintain membership with USGBC • Encourage local participation • National and regional awards • ISO14001 with Pembroke Storage

  36. Next steps for you • Environmental link handout and email • USGBC.org information • Become a LEED AP, www.gbci.org • Increase your knowledge overall • Join your local USGBC chapter • Don’t be left behind

  37. Thank You

  38. New trends emerging • Cradle-to-cradle • A principle put forth by architect William McDonough whereby materials in a building are immediately reused or recycled when they no longer fulfill their original function. Material thus never ends up as garbage but, as in nature, is endlessly reused.

  39. New trends emerging • Carbon neutral • emitting no carbon dioxide into the atmosphere; also, employing a technique to absorb carbon dioxide so it is not emitted • Becoming carbon neutral is usually achieved by implementing renewable energy projects that offset the amount of carbon dioxide emissions, such as planting trees which absorb CO2. • Carbon footprint • Carbon footprint calculator

  40. New trends emerging • LCA • also known as life cycle analysis, eco-balance, cradle-to-grave-analysis, is the investigation and valuation of the environmental impacts of a given product or service caused or necessitated by its existence. It is a variant of input-output analysis focusing on physical rather than monetary flows.

  41. New trends emerging • PVC free • Formaldehyde free • a naturally occurring volatile organic compound use in preservation. When present in high concentrations, can cause headaches, dizziness, mental impairment. It is highly irritating if inhaled and is now listed as a probable human carcinogen.

  42. New trends emerging • ISO 14001 • ISO 14001 2004 is an environmental management standard. It specifies a set of environmental management requirements for environmental management systems. The purpose of this standard is to help all types of organizations to protect the environment, to prevent pollution, and to improve their environmental performance.

  43. New trends emerging • Buy back programs • Dealer • Local programs • Refurbishing programs • Gaining popularity as a result of the environmental story of resource reuse
