  1. 5 Tips to Care for Your Children’s Teeth

  2. Care for Your Children’s Teeth • Your children count on you to keep their mouth healthy and strong. • Caring for their teeth starts even before they break through the gums. • If you have a baby, it’s important to wipe their gums after every feeding and to not let the bottle linger long in their mouth, if they are bottle-fed.

  3. Here are Some Important Tips on How to Care for Your Child’s Teeth:

  4. Brush Regularly • Once their teeth start to come in, you can begin introducing your children to the habit of brushing. Use a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste recommended by your dentist. • For the toothpaste, use an amount as little as a grain of rice. It helps to get the little ones used to cleaning their teeth from infancy. • When they grow older, kids may respond to brushing differently. A positive start will help make things easier for you and them.

  5. Make Brushing Fun • Take your little ones with you to the grocery and let them choose their toothbrush. If you can find their favorite cartoon character, that would be great. • If possible, join them as they brush their teeth. If they are not yet able to spit and hold a brush on their own, you’ll need to brush their teeth for them. • Watch a video or listen to a song about dental care so they won’t notice the time pass by.

  6. Take Them To The Dentist Regularly • Introduce your child to the dentist as soon as their teeth come on or by their first birthday. See if the dental office is holding events for kids so their first visit would be fun and memorable. • Children need to establish trust toward the dental team so the next visits will be comfortable for everyone. • The dental team will also not proceed with any treatment unless they feel that young patients are ready.

  7. Limit Intake Of Sweets • It’s natural for kids to love sweets. But sugary and starchy food can cause cavities. Limit your children’s intake of sweets and if possible, let them indulge during mealtimes. • Constantly grazing throughout the day may only increase their risk of developing tooth decay. Teach them to drink water often too. • Water helps flush down debris in the mouth to keep them from clinging onto the teeth for long.

  8. Teach Them The Value of a Healthy Smile • As your children reach the preteen or teenage years, they will become more conscious of their appearance. • Let them know that a healthy smile can help them become more confident. • Encourage them to keep up with their routine hygiene appointments, and if they are active in sports, get them a mouthguard to keep their teeth protected.
