  1. The Big Bang Theory!!

  2. What is the Big Bang Theory? • The Big Bang Theory(BBT) is the theory of how the universe was created. • About 15 billion years ago a tremendous explosion started the expansion of the universe. At the point of this event all of the matter and energy of space was contained at one point. This occurrence was not a conventional explosion but rather an event filling all of space with all of the particles of the embryonic universe rushing away from each other.

  3. Scientists believe that the Universe was initially so hot and dense, that even elementary particles like protons and neutrons could not exist. Instead, different types of matter (called matter and anti-matter) collided together, creating pure energy. • But as the Universe began to cool during the first few minutes, protons and neutrons began to form. Then slowly over time these protons, neutrons and electrons came together to form Hydrogen and small amounts of Helium.

  4. Who Created this theory? • Edwin Hubblecreated the BBT. • Hubble made the observation that the universe is continuously expanding. This phenomenon of galaxies moving farther away from each other is known as the red shift

  5. Hubble, in 1929, was able to correlate the distance to objects in the universe with their velocities -- a relation known as Hubble's Law. Big Bang theorists later used this information to approximate the age of the Universe, 15 billion years old.

  6. The term "Big Bang" was originally coined in 1950 by Sir Fred Hoyle, during a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) radio broadcast. • Hoyle was a staunch opponent of the theory. He was a proponent of the competing "Steady State" model and had a very low opinion of the idea of an expanding universe.

  7. Size of the Universe • Of course, as the size of the universe expanded, the physical scale of those wiggles increased, eventually reaching about 500 million light years today. • Like with large scale structure, the broad strokes of galaxy formation follow a path of "hierarchical clustering": small structures form very early on and these merge to form larger structures as time goes on.

  8. In June, 1995, scientists were able to detect primordial helium in the far reaches of the universe. These findings are consistent with an important aspect of the Big Bang theory that a mixture of hydrogen and helium was created at the beginning of the universe. • Astronomers using Hubble have also found the element boron in extremely ancient stars.
