  7. Clean up ! Mumbai Street sweeping • City 4,000-5,000 sq. mtr/pair • Suburbs 8,000-10,000 sq. mtr/pair Collection of waste • House to house collection 25% • Collection at community bins 75% • About 1,050 MT of recyclables are segregated and sold by about 20,000 rag pickers Treatment of MSW • Treatment at small scale plants (less than 20 MT per day) is done through involvement of NGOs. Composting and vermi-composting are the primary means of treatment. • Total treatment capacity is in the range of 100-150 MT. • 100% Landfill site management under PPP framework Dry waste sorting centers: • Creation of covered areas at the ward level are planned for segregation and recovery of recyclables. • These centers to be managed by NGOs who are expected to organize rag pickers, and interface with recycling industries.

Initiatives from corporation • Enforcement squads formed in each ward for taking daily actions against unauthorized hawking; • implementation through “Clean-up Marshals” by private security agencies • Secondary storage bins of capacity 1.1m3 • CBO’s are allowed to collect user charge from beneficiaries (Rs 10 per household per month) • Rs. 2500/- per 1000 population is paid by MCGM to CBOs per month (10% adl for hilly area). • Rs. 370/- per 1000 population is paid to CBOs per month for implements. • Refuse transfer station to be operated on “Build, own & Operate” basis for a period of 10 years. The capacity of the transfer station is 750 MT/day, which can be enhanced to 900 MT/day.

AHMEDBAD Street Sweeping • Equipments : • Short & Long Handle Brooms • Specially designed Hand Cart with Six detachable small bins. • Metal Tray & Metal Plate Door to Door collection: • 80 % Achieved with massive awareness campaign • 2000/- per month for door to door waste collection daily from 200 houses • 947 resident welfare associations involved Transportation • No manual loading of waste. • 158 Vehicles and machineries deployed for transportation. • Refuse compactor machine of 12/18 CMT capacity for vegetable waste. Processing of waste • 500 MT for Composting (M/s Excel Industries Ltd) • 500 MT for RDF (Djai Power Ltd.) • RDF based waste to energy project for 800 MT/ Day,( 7.5 mw Electricity generation)- Selco International Hyderabad

It compacts and transfers the waste to landfill or compost plant. • Capacity: 10 – 20 m3 • Compost plant of 700 TPD (3 conveyers of size 65 mm, 40mm & 16, 12 mm)

Chennai • 90 % collection efficiency from Corporation. • Rs. 500/ month for 10000 rag pickers • Parivarthanam –wonder bin ( house hold composting) • Privatized collection & transportation in 3 waste zones through global tender. ( Onyx is successful bidder). • Vehicle tracking system using GIS/GPS system. • Workshop with all facilities provided. • Mobile bins for every sweepers ( 120 to 140 lts capacity) • Capacities ranging from 8 – 15 m3 for collection, 28 – 30 m3 containers used for transportation to landfill • Cost per ton at Rs. 648 to Onyx in the first year, versus Rs. 1050 incurred by Corporation. • 1913 control room no. used effectively,

CUTTACK • Issue of photo identity cards to sweepers for avoiding substitution and false attendance • Building capacities of stakeholders through training/workshops and exposure visits and media campaigns. • Neighbourhood groups, Mahila Samitis, Yuvak Sanghs and various community based organizations have been sensitized about ideal SWM practices • Introduction of Social Audit, whereby the community supervises the performance of sweepers/drain cleaners, beat wise, go a long way in maintaining an effective monitoring and accountability system.

Suryapet • First Bin Less And Zero Garbage Town • 100 % Door to Door collection. • The drain clogging problem has reduced to 95% • Training sanitary staff & organizing Meditation, Medication and Yoga (also called as MMY) classes • Motivation for storing waste at source (daily field visits from commissioner) • Competitions were conducted regarding segregation of waste for Slums & BPL households. • Tractor method with 3 workers, 2 compartments with simple detachable wooden

Namakkal • Announcements by two Mop-Up-Vans which will go on rounds • Demonstration of Pilot project adjacent to its office before starting IEC. • 100 % Door to Door collection. • No secondary storage (taken directly to landfill site) • The recyclables are separated at two identified recyclable units • Door to door waste collection was started by the municipal staff itself and the outsourced in 50:50 ratio but presently entire system is tendered out.
