BEGINNING OF THE YOUTH MINISTRY IN THAILAND • “CATHOLIC COMMISSION FOR THE YOUTH” in the past was called “CATHOLIC YOUTH COUNCIL OF THAILAND” • formally established under the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Thailand on February 2, 1977 • presided by Excellency Bishop THIENCHAI SAMARNCHITas its president.

(History-Background) • Year 1977, the CYCT president invited for convention of the Catholic priests, religious and laymen who were responsible for youth ministry in various dioceses of Thailand at the Propagation Center of Chanthaburi Diocese • To learn about the youth problems and study the Church documents (FABC Statement), and the local Government youth policies in Thailand • In order to come out with a Youth Ministry Plan

(History-Background) • The convention also suggested the following actions. • Every diocese should accept the youth activities as the priority. • There must be youth responsible authoritiesat diocese level and full time personnelat national level. • A central office or a national headquarter should be organized.

(History-Background) • In the meantime, Reverence Father BANCHA SRIPRAMONG (from Bangkok Archdiocese) was assigned the chairman of the CYCT • heading its secretariat located at Sun-klangThewa Building PrachaSongkhro Road, Bangkok, • later on was moved to the Catholic Propagation Building (CPB) located in Bangrak District, Bangkok.

  20. (History-Background) • Year 1978was really the starting year of actual operation of the CYCT, including group organization and renewal of youth group. The religious and priests were also encouraged to participate in more youth work and act in the same direction.

(History-Background) • Year 1979the CYCT secretariat changed its roles from participating in the youth activities of various dioceses to coordinating their activities in the whole country, and to relating with non Catholic groups • Reverence Father BanchaSripramong wrote and published a book “ManutSamphan” (Human Relationship) to be the Youth Training Manual.

  22. (History-Background) • Year 1980Reverence Father BanchaSripramong fell sick and Reverence Father CHALOEM KITMONGKHON(from Chantaburi Diocese) was assigned in his replacement as the Chairman of the youth executive commission • Year 1981 the youth draft constitution was approved as its formal permanent constitution • November 1981 Father THINNARAT KHOMKRIT (from the Brothers of St. Gabriel Order) was assigned as Executive Secretary General.

(History-Background) • Year 1982the youth work became clearly more systematical, and commission for special task was organized to scrutinize the priorities e.g. domestic fund raising, systematical structure of work plan for both present and future, outline of programs and work result assessment, an annual seminar for national youth leaders once a year. • Thus the first seminar for the youth leaders took place on October 11-15, 1982 at TEOFARN Building (Assumption Sriracha School) in Sriracha District, Chonburi Province.

(History-Background) • Year 1983there was new structure of fifteen organizations comprising of ten diocesan youth coordination centers and five organizations for Catholic youth groupings • Therefore the secretariat office had its roles changed to only coordinating and assessing their work result, arranging national activities and producing mass media.

(History-Background) • Year 1984 the CYCT began developing and emphasizing the youth problem, and approved the program for children and vagrant youths. • Year 1985, on January 13 the CYCT opened the Youths’ International Year at Assumption School, Bangkok, presided by Em. Bishop Renato Martinothe Apostolic Nuncio together with Excellency Bishop ThienchaiSamarnchit. On the occasion, Music tape with books “YuwakarnPlibanHaengDokmai”(Young Age the Blossom) was produced, and each organization in each diocese had undertaken their activities successively through out the whole year.

(History-Background) • Year 1986ExcellencyBishop ThienchaiSamarnchit appointed Reverence Father PHITHAK YOTHARAK(from Chantaburi Diocese) as new CYCT executive secretary general for three years from February 6, 2531/1988 to February 5, 2534/1991 • In year 2530/1987, the CYCT president Excellency Bishop ThienchaiSamarnchit was replaced by Excellency Bishop SANGWAN SURASARANG

(History-Background) • Year 1990 Reverence Father PhithakYotharakplanned the work procedure and determined the secretariat’s roles and objectives including target and work policy into the following six aspects: • Youths themselves • Youth groups • Personnel development • Coordination and executive system • Information data and public relations • Follow up and assessment

(History-Background) • Year 1991, Reverence Father CHATCHAWAN SUPHALAK (from Bangkok Archdiocese)was assigned as a new CYCT executive secretary general • There were other achievements as below: • The first Thai youth group was sent to join the International Youth Year in Poland on August • Application for SCLF (Swiss Catholic Lenten Fund) • News Columnist of “Open CYCT” published in UDOMSAN Weekly • Renewal of CYCT pamphlet

  29. (History-Background) • Year 1992 • the 7th plan of the youth ministry was approved • Coordination with Brother GHISLAIN from Taize. Two youth funds per year were received fro getting in touch with Taize’s life during three months. The fund would be circulated to the affiliation organizations to assist their representatives participating in the youth programs

(History-Background) • Year 1993, some activities were achieved: • FABC Seminar for the authority responsible for youth in Asia • The first youth group in touch with Taize’s life during three months included SuphawadiKhanapkaew(SuratThani Diocese), MallikaMunchinda and KesiniKhunachok(the University Students Federation) • Three Thai youths and three priests took part inthe World Youth Year in Devour, Colorado, USA.

  31. (History-Background) • Year 1994 • The first seminar of the national youth Ministry coordinators. • The first youth exchange program “German-Thai”. In that year a German Youth group came to Thailand (visit Mercy Center in Khlong Toei run by Reverence Father Mayer, C.Ss.R.,“TharnCheewit” (Living Water) Center in Pattaya run by the Good Shepherd Sisters and hill tribes’ life in Chiang Mai Province) and in the following year a Thai Youth group was to go to Germany.

  32. (History-Background) • Year 1995, the CYCTsecretariat was moved (from CPB, Bangrak, Bangkok) to the CBCT Building ,Yannawa, Bangkok . Some achievements were: • 40 Thai youths were sent to join the X World Youth Year in Manila, the Philippines. • 10 Thai youths were sent to participate in the German-Thai Youth Exchange Program in Munich, Germany. • Taize Music Tape “At-Sajan-Hang-Rak” (Miracle Of Love) was produced, involving with the Joint Operation fund of CYCT and German-Thai Youth Exchange Program.

  33. (History-Background) • Year 1996, celebrating the 10th International Youth Anniversaryat the Seminarian of St. Joseph in Samphran, participated by about 1,800 youths. • Youth Music Tape entitled “Bork-Kwarm-Rak-Praong-Hai-Lok-Ru” (Tell the World of His Love) was produced • Reverence Father LEO OCHOWA,SDB. was assigned a new CYCT executive secretary general • the 8th Youth Ministry Plan that covered five years task was approved under the following aspects:  • Personnel training. • Group of experience. • Education and culture. • Evangelization and catechism • Inter-relationship in both society and environment.

  34. (History-Background) • Year 1997 There were the following accomplishments: • The CYCT secretary and some representatives were sent to participate in the convention“BILA ON YOUTH” in the Philippines • A sub-committee was organized to amend and update the CYCT constitution (regulations). • Thai Youth participated the XII World Youth Day - Paris, France

  35. (History-Background) • Year 1998 There were the following achievements: • Thailand was chosen by FABC to host the First ASIAN YOUTH DAY. As a preparation for this event the Campaign of the pilgrimage of the Cross of good will was launched to prepare Thai Catholic Youth for this event in all dioceses. • Manuals of“Verbal Worship and Prayer” were produced for conducting youth groups’ activities, and the campaign for more prayer in various forms. • To join the committee for preparation of the “Jubilee Year 2000” • Taize tape-CD production ,the 2nd edition entitled “Pieng-Prachao-Piengpor” (God Only Enough). • The youth regulations on the executive work and the secretariat staffs were formally approved and enforced on May 31, 1998.

  36. (History-Background) • Year 1999, Reverence Father SOMCHAI ANCHALIPHONSAN from Bangkok Archdiocese was appointed a new CYCT executive secretary. • There were the following performances: • The FIRST ASIAN YOUTH DAYevent which was taken place at HuaHinVitayalai School, Prachaubkirikan Province on August 7-12, 1999. The activity was performed along with the guideline “Asian youths, advance ahead with Jesus to the new millennium”, and under the Gospel’s theme “Rejoice,…the Lord is with you”. (Lk:1:28). • Followed by the first AYMM (the Asian Youth Ministry Meeting) was held on August 12-17, 1999. • The documentary research meeting took place to prepare for the year 2000. The meeting then formulated the direction of the church youth ministry in Thailand.

  37. (History-Background) • Year 2000, the following actions were performed: • The 7th Seminar of Coordination Youth Team Work was held on July 24-28, 2000 in Udon Diocese. The seminar participants went to visit Loa youth in Vientiane, too. • At St. Joseph Upatham School, Samphran, the Youth Convention was arranged on October 16-20, 2000 to prepare and celebrate the “Year of Jubilee” under the title “Youth forces unite, build creative love and advance to the new millennium” • Youth Music Tape+CD entitled “Teim-Rak-Mai” (New Love Filled) was produced. • Thai Youth participated the XV World Youth Day - Rome, Italy

  38. (History-Background) • Year 2001, to implement the Church Ministry Direction of the year 2000 in Thailand, the CBCT thus declared a new work structure and changed the CYCT name to its actual name “The Catholic Commission For Youth” (CYO). • The following tasks were implemented: • Bringing Thai Youth toparticipate the 2nd AYD in Taiwan, followed by the 2ndAYMM. • The first Youth Ministry Training for the 2nd year students of SaengTham College on the practice of the youth ministry. • The 25th Youth Council was held on November 19-23, 2001 at Nam Un Irrigation in SakonNakhon Province, by which Reverence Father KowitCharoenphongwas elected as a new executive secretary general.

  39. (History-Background) • Year 2002, Reverence Father KOWIT CHAROENPHONG (from Udonthani Diocese)a new executive secretary general • the 9thYouth Ministry Plan under the approved resolution was to have been implemented for ten years (from 2002 to 2011) together with annual follow-up and every five years evaluation. • celebration of the 25th CYO Anniversary according with the “Candle Light of Peace” program, by which the candles was to be lit to pray for peace at 20.00 hrs. on September 20, and at the same time in the same day, they did the same simultaneously through the whole country and it was welcome by the affiliation organizations. • participating in the XVII World Youth Day in Toronto, Canada. • Arrange “Taize” prayer during the World Boy-Scout Convention on December 26-31 in Sriracha, Chonburi.

  40. (History-Background) • Year 2003 participating in the 3rd Asian Youth Day in Bangalore, India. • Year 2004, • Attending the Convention of Asian (Youth) Coordinators was held on March 4-7 in Manila City, the Philippines. • Training course of Southeast Asian Youths was arranged on March 19-21 at St. Louis (King) Church,Tha-khaek, KhwaengKhammuang province, Lao. • Training Course of Southeast Asian Youths was undertaken at July 16-18 at the Secret Heart Church, Pak-se, Lao. • The 28th Youth Council took placed on November 15-19 in MuangYa Charley Resort, NakhonRatchasima Province.

  41. (History-Background) • Year 2005, Reverence Father SuksanChaopaknam, SDB.from Salesian Order was assigned a new (CYO) executive secretary general • The following actions were done: • The 2nd Consultative Body Meeting (FABC-OL-Youth Desk) was held at St. Gabriel’s House, Bangkok – 3 from CYO attended. • Youth Unity Camping was arranged and conducted on June 23-26 with cooperation of the Religion Patronage Division of Religion Department, Culture Ministry at the TOT Science Center and on August 9-11 at Activity Center of Junior Red Cross “KathinKuiyakanon” • Thai Youths participated in the 20th World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany. • To conduct Taize prayer together withLutherian Brothers on October 2. • Participate in the Committee for preparing the Asian Mission Congress and Thailand Mission next year.

  42. (History-Background) • Year 2006 more Taize prayer worships were held together with various Christian sectarianism. • Thai Youth participating the 4th Asian Youth Day in Hong Kong. • Organize the Youth Mission Day (the Youth Assembly for Evangelization) on the August 11 at Joseph Upatham School. The different agencies gave full support with 1,200 youth participating. There were exhibits and shows and at the end was a Conciliation Rite with the permission from the Cardinal to absolve some preserved grave sins that only bishops can give the absolution.

  43. (History-Background) • Year 2007 The CBCT has declared to use the new structure for management for a year. For this the Catholic Council for Youth has been changed to Youth Section under the Pastoral Affairs, but because It is still under study for its scope of work The Catholic Council for the Youth has maintained its work according to its old policies as before. • Cooperating with the Taize Community to prepare the Pilgrimage of Trust on earth in Bangkokcontinuously through the year and prepare the Prayer Assembly led by Brother aLoisthe General of The Brothers of Taize, France in the Assumption Cathedral, Bangkok on November 11 at 7.15 p.m. There will be workshops for youths in the afternoon at 3 p.m. led by Brother GHISLAINin preparation for the evening prayer.

  44. (History-Background) • Taize Music CDs (Both Instrumental and Vocal included also a Taize Song Book) “Rak-Wang-Jai” (Love & Trust) was produced in Thai version (with permission from the Taize Community) which will be launched on November 11 (before Taize Prayer Service begins). • Training the CYO staff to learn the skills of writing website and then launching our office website named “http://youth.cbct.net” • Publishing the Manual of Youth Ministry (Thai language) to be used as a text-book for teaching the 2nd year students of Lux Mundi Major Seminary College. • Holding the 24th national youth leadership camp at the mission center of Chantaburi Diocese (15-19 October).

  45. (History-Background) • Producing the “Youth Dance” (Music Video) to demonstrate how to dance in all of these youth songs: Only selfless love, Shine Jesus Shine, Called to be a saint, God is near, Hand in Hand, Tell the world of his love, and Asian Jam . • Holding the Southeast Asia 1 Meeting (Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia) on September 3-4, at the headquarter of the Salesian Order in Bangkok, moderated by Ms. Joy Candelario (FABC youth office). • Sending two young Catholics in touch with Taize’s life for three months; one from Udonthani Diocese and another from Y.C.S.
