  1. More About DNA February 23, 2012

  2. DO NOW! • Please sketch the following in your science notebook:

  3. Reminders: • Please raise your hand if you have any of the following to turn in: • Test corrections • Microbiology Test—HW (DUE TOMORROW) • Parent Letters • Don’t forget—Human Body Systems Retests tomorrow during Cougar Time

  4. Agenda for 02/23: • Finish up any missing notes from yesterday. • 2-minute speed drill review • DNA demonstration…Collecting DNA from Wheat Germ • Articles & Questions • You will receive one of 3 articles to review • FAST FACTS—Last minute notes before Lab tomorrow

  5. 2 minute speed Drill WITH THE PERSON/PEOPLE SITTING NEXT TO YOU, ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. THIS IS A RACE. FIRST TEAM TO ANSWER ALL 5 QUESTIONS CORRECTLY WHILE SITTING QUIETLY & RAISING HANDS WILL WIN…. What is DNA? Where is it located? What is the name of the structure of DNA given by Watson and Crick? What are the four bases that make up DNA? How are the 4 bases paired?

  6. DNA Demonstration • I will call on students to assist that are being quiet. • We are using different substances to draw out the DNA of a grain product called Wheat Germ.

  7. Articles There are two articles…you will receive one to read. We are going to use a strategy to help guide our reading called the Double Entry Journal.

  8. Double Entry Journal Directions In your notebook, open up where you have two clean pages next to each other. (See sample I provided. This is my notebook…please show care.)

  9. Double entry journal directions • Draw a line vertically (down the center) of both pages to create four columns.

  10. Double Entry journal directions • Label each column at the top: • Column 1—Notes • Column 2—Reactions • Column 3—Peer Response • Column 4—Thinking Now?

  11. Now, as you read your article individually… • Add 4-6 comments from the article that you find interesting in your NOTES column. You should do this as you read. You may write the notes as actual quotes from the text.

  12. DOUBLE ENTRY JOURNAL EXAMPLE

  13. Column 2--Reactions • Next to each comment in the notes section, you will then make a personal comment (individually…you may want to do this as you read) about your feelings about the statement.

  14. DOUBLE ENTRY JOURNAL EXAMPLE

  15. Column 3—Peer response • You will then pass your notebook to the person on your left. They will read each of your quotes and reactions. They will then write their thoughts & feelings to your ideas in the “PEER RESPONSE” next to each section. They can agree or disagree with your comments.

  16. DOUBLE ENTRY JOURNAL EXAMPLE

  17. Column 4—Thinking now? • For the last column, the notebook will be returned to the owner. You will read the comments by your peer. You will then add how your thoughts have developed from their input.

  18. DOUBLE ENTRY JOURNAL EXAMPLE

  19. EXIT TICKET • What did you think about the Double Entry Journal? • Tell me the names of the four bases and how they match up. • Where is DNA located?
