  2. The NIH Mission The NIH mission is science in pursuit of fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability.

Increasing Diversity • High School Students - Early-career Faculty: -Diversity Supplements: supports individuals from under-represented racial and ethnic groups; individuals with disabilities; and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. • Undergraduate Students: -Expanding Diversity in Engineering and the Physical Sciences:supports undergraduate diversity students in STEM fields at UMBC and savannah State University. -Enhancing Neuroscience Diversity Through Undergraduate Research Education Experiences (ENDURE) (R25): connects activities at undergraduate minority-serving institutions with neuroscience graduate training programs. • Graduate Students: Diversity Predoctoral Fellowships(F31)

Minority Biomedical Research Support Program (MBRS) Strengthens research capabilities; supports faculty research; increases interest, skills and competitiveness of faculty and students at minority-serving institutions. Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) - Support of Competitive Research (SCORE) - Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) - Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD)Institutional Research Development & Support Awards (S06)-$100K/year for 4 years - support core facilities, shared equipment, seminars, workshopsInvestigator-initiated Research Project Awards: SC1 – 4 year renewable award ($125-250K/year) (like R01) SC2 – 3 year nonrenewable award ($100K/year) (like R15) SC3 – 4 year renewable award ($50-$75K/year) (like R03)

Research Grants Have Different Purposes R03 (Small – Proof of Concept) - $50K per year for 2 years - Not used by all NIH institutes R21 (Exploratory/Developmental – Not Renewable) - $275K per year for 2 years - Not used by all NIH Institutes - No preliminary data required/Not intended to be a starter grant R01 (Standard) - $400K-$500K per year for 4-5 years - Preliminary data required R15 (AcademicResearchEnhancementAwards) - $300K per year for 3 years - Supports Preliminary data required

  11. New and Early-stage Investigators New Investigator (NI)– Applicant who has not previously been a PI on a significant NIH research award. Early-Stage Investigator (ESI)- New Investigator within 10 years of completing their terminal degree. • Peer reviewers expect less preliminary data and focus • more on the approach of early-stage investigators than • their track record. • New investigators submitting their first competing R01 renewal and scoring close to the institute payline are eligible for an additional year of bridge funding. • New and early-stage investigator R01 paylines can be up to 5 percentile points beyond the regular institute payline.

NIH Director's Early Independence Awards • Inspired by programs at Carnegie, Whitehead, UCSF, and other institutions. • Helps exceptional early-career scientists skip traditional post-doctoral training. • Reduces time it takes early-career scientists to launch independent research careers. • Receipt date: January 31, 2012

  14. Take Home Lessons • NIH wants to fund the best science by the best scientists. Help is available, but you have to connect with it. • Writing the perfect grant takes focused attention and coordination, NOT just creativity. • NIH evaluates your ideas through your written grant application - MAKE it count! • NIH use electronic oversight to strictly apply the rules. Stand out with your ideas, NOT your presentation. • Most grants are NOT funded on the first try. Respond appropriately to critiques and be persistent.

Design by Biomedical Undergraduate Teams (DEBUT) Challenge • Open to domestic undergraduate students • Team-based design projects in three categories: • Diagnostic Devices/Methods • Therapeutic Devices/Methods • Technology to Aid Underserved Populations and Individuals with Disabilities. • Winners in each category receive: • $10,000 prize • Up to $2,000 in travel costs to attend award ceremony at BMES Annual Meeting • Entry deadline: May 26, 2012; Winners announced: July 31, 2012 http://debut.challenge.gov/

  16. Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary Training Biological, clinical, and physical scientists speak differentlanguages. Biologists and clinicians may not know what is technically possible; engineers may not be aware of the biological and clinical issues. Multidisciplinary and inter-disciplinary mentoring and training is essential to insure successful collaboration.

Pathway to Independence(K99/R00 Program) - US citizens or non-citizens - < 5 years of postdoctoral experience - Must be in dependent position - Five years of total support: K99 Phase - 2 yrs mentored postdoctoral support ($90K/yr total costs with 8% F&A) Must secure independent faculty position AND pass administrative review R00 Phase – 3 yrs independent research support; ($249K/yr total costs with full F&A)

Research Education Programs for Residents and Fellows (R25) • Integrates education programs of Radiology and other clinical departments and supports residents and fellows in radiology and other NIBIB-relevant residency programs as clinician-scientists. • Parent program based in radiology department. • Program participants from radiology and other residency programs, including cardiology, neurology, oncology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, and surgery. • 12 or 24 month support • >75% effort • $70k/participant, $10k expenses, $1k travel • 2 participants/yr

  20. Loan Repayment Program • Applicants: (1) must be US citizens or permanent residents; (2) have a doctoral (MD, MD-PhD, or PhD) degree; and (3) educational debt > 20% of their annual salary. • Applicants must be engaged > 50% time in qualified research at (or funded by) US government or domestic nonprofit institutions. • Federal employees or individuals who have a Federal or state health service obligation are not eligible. • NIH will repay half (up to $70K) of your qualified educational debt (and Federal taxes) over two years. Application Receipt Dates:May 1 (Intramural) December 1 (Extramural)

Investments in Innovation The NIH Common Fund invests millions of dollars to fund new high-risk research to explore ideas that have strong potential to improve health Early Independence Awards - help early-career investigators skip traditional postdoctoral training and launch independent research careers (10 awards in 2010). New! stress individuals stress projects New Innovator Awards – support promising new investigators and stimulate highly innovative research (164 awards since 2007). Pioneer Awards– support scientists of exceptional creativity who propose pioneering approaches to major research challenges (94 awards since 2004). Transformative R01 Awards– support creative projects that have the potential to overturn conventional research paradigms (79 awards since 2009).
