  1. Carnegie Mellon University(& University of Pittsburgh)James F. Antaki, PhD Workshop on BME Teaching of Innovation, Design & Entrepreneurship

  2. Bioengineering SENIOR DESIGNCOURSE ELEMENTS • Senior Year - two semesters • Semester - 1: Project Definition • Medical Faculty • didactics: project mgmt; design “theory”; etc… • Deliverable: SBIR Proposal • Semester - 2: Execution • Industrial Mentors • bonus lectures: patenting, economics, ethics, business, regulatory affairs • Deliverables: Fully defined detailed report. (+simulation or proof-of-concept prototype)

  3. Particularly novel and/or effective methods we use to teach innovation & entrepreneurship • Prescriptive design method: • Form follows function • User-Centered • Interaction with Medical Faculty • Industrial Mentors • “Product Anatomy Lab” • Real-world skills: • “engineering estimation” • brainstorming techniques & exercises • medical vocabulary • “Incentives”

  4. How do you measure outcomes? • standard course evaluations x 2 • “Family Feud” • future: intermediate evaluations (open for suggestions)

  5. Example of Course Material (1) ESTIMATE: how many tanker truckloads of blood will the heart pump in one lifetime? (2) ESTIMATE: what percentage of your brain mass is destroyed by chugging a 6-pack of beer? (3) ESTIMATE: how many lbs of force are exerted on your shoulder joint when lifting a 1 gallon pail of water? (Assume you are holding your arm horizontally.) 1) 10 minutes independently 2) 5 minutes in teams (#3 only) 3) then goto Estimation.xls

  6. Example of Project MEDICAL IMAGING GENERAL SURGERY RHEUMATOLOGY ORTHOPEDICS CARDIOLOGY NEUROLOGY OB/GYN REGENERATIVE MEDICINE REHABILITATION
