  3. Basic Attributes • Small to medium sized (7-30 cm) • Terrestrial or aquatic • Internal fertilization • Juveniles and adults have lungs • Long slender bodies • Long tails • 4 legs • 4 toes on forelimbs • 5 toes on hindlimbs

  4. Distribution • Throughout Europe to Asia • Some live in North Africa • North America • Eastern half of NA • Along the west coast of US and Canada

  6. Special Features • Most species have a toxic skin secretion • Many have aposematic (brightly colored) skin • elaborate defensive displays • elaborate displays of courtship • Involves a lot of tail shaking
