  2. Geography • Greenland is an island. • It is located in the Arctic Circle. • It is mostly covered by glaciers—84%. • The rest of the land is covered in permafrost—frozen land. • It has mountains, fjords and rocky coasts.

  5. People of Greenland • The native people of Greenland are called Greenland Inuit or Kalaallit. • Population of Greenland is 56,000—88% Inuit—12% Europeans. • They speak Greenlandic, Danish and English.

  6. Native Peoples • The native people of Greenland are called Greenland Inuit. • They hunt and fish for food. • They speak Greenlandic. • The do not farm because plants do not grow well in the Arctic. They do eat the plants that grown naturally, like grasses and berries.

  7. Native Peoples • People use dog sleds to get from one place to another. • The Husky is a breed of dog mixed with wolf that came from Greenland. • The Inuit use stars and landmarks to navigate.

The Environment • Global warming is causing the ice in Greenland to melt. • In August of 2010, the Petermann glacier in Greenland broke apart. • When the ice melts, it causes the level of the ocean to rise. • When the ice melts, it absorbs more heat from the sun, making Greenland even hotter and melting even more ice.

  9. Global Warming • Global warming is the rising average temperature of the air and the oceans on the planet. • Scientists are very certain that there is only reason the temperature is rising: it is the direct result of human activity.
