  1. Comparative Myth By Sue Graham and Annette Miller

  2. During this presentation we will show the differences and similarities between Greek Mythology and four other civilizations.

  3. The four different societies we shall be looking at are as follows: • Aztec Culture • Mayan Culture • Egyptian Culture • Celtic Culture

  4. Aztec Culture • In Mexico, all that spoke the language “Nahuatl” were considered to be Aztecs. • There were many different gods and goddesses and the Aztecs believed that they ruled over the activities of nature and life. • Ceremonial centers were built for the purpose of worshipping these many gods. • The Aztecs believed that it was necessary to give thanks to their gods or to incur the gods wrath. • It appears that the Aztecs were the worst civilization to practice human sacrifice.

  5. Mayan Culture • The Mayan culture is old and steeped in culture. • The Mexican states of Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo were some areas that were occupied by the Mayans. • The Mayans were around before the Aztecs and there are some descendants still alive today. • Mayan’s were artistic and they invented their own style of picture-writing. Unfortunately not much of their writing has remained in existence to this day. • A book of the rules and rituals, the Popol Vuh, documented creation and history for the people of Mayan culture. The booked survived the Spanish conquest due to Mayan priests and clerks secretly copying the book into Latin.

  6. Egyptian Culture • The Egyptian culture closely tied it’s kings and queens with the gods and goddesses. • The Egyptians were notable for their architecture of the pyramids, obsession with death and the mummification process. • There were 173 or more gods worshiped over time in ancient Egypt. • The culture looked to their gods mainly for protection and prosperity. • Many of these gods overlap and there is a remarkable number of gods that are dedicated to the underworld and the afterlife both for protection and judgment as well as punishment. • The Egyptians had a multi step view of the afterlife. • Three forms of the spirit. • Akh – form taken after death. • Ba – living persons character or “soul.” • Ka - both the spirit and spiritual form released at death, but also in dreams during life, would travel to the underworld along with Ba to create the Akh. • Culture followed succession myth with son’s overthrowing fathers and brother succeeding brother. • Had very specific and complex burial rituals.

  7. Celtic Culture • The Celtic culture is complex in that it encompasses different several cultures. The myths and deities are from Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Cornwall and Brittany (France) ancient Gaul and Britain. • The Celts were noted for their military skills, metal crafting, road and boat building and advances in river navigation. • Much like the Greeks and Romans their societies were divided into social and political classes and they also observed marked ages and periods. • In most cases the myths survived but not intact for reasons attributed to invasions and influence of other indo-European cultures.

  8. Zeus Poseidon Hades Hera Hestia Demeter Aphrodite Hephaestus Athena Ares Artemis Apollo Dionysus Greek Deities

  9. Creation Myths • Greek Creation Myth • Aztec Creation Myth • 2nd Aztec Creation Myth • Mayan Creation Myth • 2nd Mayan Creation myth • Egyptian Creation Myth • Celtic Creation Myth

  10. Flood Myths • Greek Flood Myth • Aztec Flood Myth • Mayan Flood Myth • Egyptian Flood Myth • Celtic Flood Myth • Welsh Version of Flood Myth

  11. Archetype vs. Diffusion • During our research we found enough evidence to support the diffusion theory for Egyptian and Celtic as related to Greek mythology. • During our research we found enough similarities to support the archetype theory for Aztec and Mayan as related to Greek mythology. • We do not believe from our research, that it is possible to rule out either theory from the cultures that we have studied.

  12. Summary • What we have found in our research was that although all of these cultures were very similar in nature. • They believed in and worshipped many gods. • They made sacrifices to their gods for protection and prosperity. • They had many similar myths: such as creation and the flood myths.
