Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation • Offers one of only 18 graduate level athletic training programs across the country • WMU has the first accredited adaptive physical education program • Offers the first Unified Sports Program in the U.S. offered in collaboration with Special Olympics, a university, and the community

College of Education • Produces the ninth largest number of professional educators in the nation • Between 1993-2003, the college produced 7,163 new teachers • Half of all courses taught off-campus • Battle Creek, Benton Harbor/St. Joseph, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Muskegon, and Traverse City • Also collaborates with Ferris State University on two doctoral programs. • Western Michigan University

WMU Colleges • Researchers from WMU’s College of Arts and Sciences teamed up with city of Kalamazoo to make it the first city in the continental United States to use trap grease as a fuel source for its city buses • WMU’s Haworth College of Business is one of the 20 largest undergraduate business programs in the United States • School of Music ranks in the top three schools in the nation for the number of awards received from Down Beat magazine

WMU Colleges cont. • In 2005, the College of Health and Human Services moved into its new home, a high-tech, 200,000-square-foot building on the University’s Oakland Drive Campus. • The College of Aviation, located at W.K. Kellogg Airport in Battle Creek, occupies 95,000 square feet on 20 acres, and it is one of the largest and most innovative aviation programs in the nation.

WMU Men’s Club Volleyball • Nationally known men’s club program in the 1990s • Program was dropped and then brought back in 2004 • Went to the national tournament in 2007 and 2008 • Lost in the silver division finals in 2008 to UC Irvine • Member of the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) • Member of the GMMVC (Greater Midwest Men’s Volleyball Conference)

  9. Songs of WMU • Alumnus James H. Bull won in the lyrics category for the “Alma Mater”. Alumnus Walter Gilbert developed the lyrics for the fight song and music for the Alma Mater and Fight Song. • Alma Mater:Western we sing to you, Brown and Gold. Western we bring to you faith untold. You challenge and inspire; your hope is our desire; We sing to you our Alma Mater, Brown and Gold. • WMU Fight Song:Fight on fight on for Western;take the ball, make a score, win the game.Onward for the Brown and Gold; Push ‘em back, push ‘em back bring us fame.Fight on fight on for Western; over one, over all we will reign.Fight, Broncos fight,fight with all your might. Western win this game!

WMU Facts cont. • WMU awarded nearly $208 million in financial assistance to 19,942 students in 2005-06; about $44 million of that total went to some 3,034 graduate students. • WMU’s campuses encompass more than 1,200 acres and 151 buildings. • In its annual ranking of the nation’s 4,000 colleges and universities, U.S. News & World Report consistently lists WMU as one of the nation’s top 100 public universities.
