  8. Note Taking Section Cues Summary

  9. 四 Important Documents The Magna Carta

  10. The Magna Carta • Written by English nobles in 1215. • King John II of England forced to sign it. • Guaranteed free people could not be arrested, imprisoned, or exiled without a trial by jury • Guaranteed English citizens could only be judged by English law (meaning the king couldn’t just decide you needed to die) • The Magna Carta’s guarantees are reflected today in the 5th and 6th amendments to the United States Constitution.

  11. 四 Important Documents English Bill of Rights

  12. The English Bill of Rights • In 1689, England’s Parliament strengthened the rights of the Magna Carta with the English Bill of Rights. • Prevented taxation without representation • Prevented cruel and unusual punishments (just like our 8th amendment does today) • Protected the right to bear arms (just like our 2nd amendment does today) • Protected freedom of speech (for law makers) (sort of like our 1st amendment today)

  13. 四 Important Documents Mayflower Compact

  14. Mayflower Compact • When they arrived at Cape Cod, the Puritans wrote the Mayflower Compact (named after their boat). • Instead of having someone hand-picked by the king, the Puritans reserved the right to choose their own leaders and make their own laws. • This document was the first example in the English colonies of self-government. • The Puritans are NOT linked to freedom of religion. They left England because they couldn’t convince enough people their way was right. So, in the Puritan’s colony, you HAD TO worship their way.

  15. 四 Important Documents Common Sense

  16. Common Sense • Published by Thomas Paine in early 1776 • 46 page pamphlet written in common language (instead of fancy talk) • Adjusted for population, this pamphlet was as popular as the Hunger Games is today. • Even though the fighting of the American Revolution had started, most people thought that after the war, everyone would peacefully go back to being English citizens. • Thomas Paine’s pamphlet suggested breaking with England as the necessary result of the war.

  17. 五 Notes Review CUES Note Taking Section Magna Carta says no1 is above law Magna Carta = trial by jury (like 5th and 6th amendment) • What is the main idea of the Magna Carta? • What is guaranteed by the Magna Carta? How is this like our Constitution?
