  3. Why apprenticeships? • Developed by employers • Raises skills levels • Allows you to ‘grown your own’ to fit current business needs • Provides the skills you need for your business growth for the future • Develops your future leaders

  4. Apprentice Eligibility • At least 16 years of age • Not participating in any other full time education • Not have a level 4 or above qualification • Not be an overseas national • Not be taking part in any other government-funded scheme • Not on remand • Lived in the UK for a minimum for 3 years and fit the learner eligibility guidance

What is an apprenticeship? • National programme leading to a nationally recognised qualification • Apprenticeships comprise three strands: 1) Competency: NVQ at Level 2 or 3, linked to management / supervision requirements 2) Knowledge: Certificate in Team Leading (Level 2) or Management (Level 3) 3) Transferable or key skills: functional skills such as teamwork, communication & presentations, including literacy & numeracy Invest in today to invest in tomorrow: Develop the skills the employer requires while also developing new skills for future progress

  6. You can be an apprentice if you are • The apprenticeship is directly relevant to the job • Strongly motivated and enthusiastic • Willing to learn and apply this at work There are no formal qualification entry requirements

  7. Where does the training take place? • In the workplace, at times to suit the individual / group A recent report by City & Guilds found that over half of businesses who already recruit apprentices say they offer more value than university graduates do, with 89% of the firms questioned stating that apprentices will be key to their company's success.

What are the benefits for the employer? • Improves the bottom line • Fills those skills gaps • Helps succession planning • Motivates the workforce • Accesses government funding • Fits the learning around the business needs • Starts at any time • Leads to increased customer satisfaction • 80% of employers agree that apprentices make the workplace more productive

  9. What businesses need to do.. • Commit to this as the employer • Give the apprentice the opportunity and time to learn • Line managers to support apprentices through the journey • Provide relevant stationery • Occasionally release the apprentice for group tutorials and training

  10. How much does it cost – and who pays? • 16-18: no cost to employer • 19-24: £??? • 25+ £??? Employers state that training apprentices is more cost effective than hiring skilled staff, leading to lower overall training & recruitment costs

In summary… • Vocational, practical, on-the-job training: leading to a national qualification developed by industry for industry • Management apprenticeships gain either Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualifications • NVQ Certificate in Team Leading (at Level 2) • NVQ Certificate in Management (at Level 3)
