Background • Needs are inadequately addressed all along illness trajectory. • Consequences: poor quality of life, inappropriate and costly responses to problems, prolonged in-patient stays, further disablement. • Large gaps in the evidence base : what works for whom?. • There are methodological problems in carrying out research in dementia. • Dementia research in community settings is under-developed

  3. Aims and objectives • Cohort of people with dementia, and their families. (up to 2000 research participants) • Develop and test interventions that improve patient, carer and service outcomes in: • Recognition and first response; • Management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD); • Management of incontinence at home; and • End of life care. • Evaluate the impact of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, & develop educational interventions to support the application of the Act.

  4. Research Setting • Central North West London NHS Foundation Trust will host the programme. • The cultural and social diversity of London and surrounding areas (includes Essex and Hertfordshire) • Primary, secondary and social care settings • In association with North Thames DENDRON • User and carer perspectives will contribute to project design, implementation and analysis.

  5. Anticipated outputs, outcomes and impact • Training package for general practice • A computer decision support system for diagnosis • Shared care guidelines for medication use • Exercise promotion for management of BPSD • A toolkit for management of incontinence • A toolkit for palliative care in dementia, suitable for use in both community and care home settings • Practice guidance on the use of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, including its use in adult protection work. • Increased research capacity in dementia in the community
