  2. Defining the Problem • The community college transfer student who seeks the bachelor’s degree but fails, negatively affects many: • Self • Family • Community college • Four year college • American Society • Global Society Speaker: Georgiy Gorelik

  3. Explaining the Goal • What would cause the community college transfer student to fail? • We brainstormed for these possible variables. • We decided upon 7 variables/hypotheses and formed 7 research teams. Speaker: Allison Dell Otto

What are solutions from research and our common sense? • High Cost of Tuition: Get more financial aid; more help from the government, available loans with low interest, grants and scholarships • Lack of Academic Preparedness: better advising and counseling, challenging classes in high school and community colleges, the 2 and 4 year need to partner to make a smoother transition, self-motivation needs to be cultivated. • Personal Issues: speaking to counselors, speaking with your parents about problems you have, don’t hold personal issues inside • Health Problems: better academic counselors, better health problems that promote health both physical and mental. Vaccinations promoted and suppressing amount of alcohol and drug abuse. Speaker: Desiree Morris

What are solutions from research and our common sense? • Juggling Work and School: government should pay for living expenses, financial aid needs to increase, employees should pay more so students don’t have to work more hours, if you work at job related to your major employer should help pay for tuition • Binge Drinking/Excessive Partying: acquire some self discipline, talk to advisors, attend alcohol programs, don’t join fraternities, sororities • Experiencing racial, religious, or sexual orientation intolerance: construct better support systems and groups for minority students, less racism amongst leaders and instructors, more interaction between students of different races, a bigger minority presence on campus, design an academic boot camp for students of color who need a little push and find ways to make different cultures acceptable in an academic environment.
