  1. THE DAY OF PENTECOST • Pentecost means 50 • 50 days after Passover • Offering of first fruits to God • 50 days after 1st Passover Moses receives the Law • Remembering the giving of the Law

  2. POPULAR TEACHING • Birthday of the church • Reversal of Babel • First fruits of the work of Jesus • External law replaced by internal Spirit • Church baptised once and for all in the Spirit • Acts 2 for all Jewish Christians • Acts 8 for all half Jews • Acts 10 for all Gentiles

  3. WHAT I BELIEVE • 1st time the Spirit is given in fullness • 1st time is unique, but event is repeatable UNIQUE FEATURES • Sound like the wind • Tongues of fire • All Spirit-given languages understood BUT • No hint those baptised in Spirit were representative groups • Cornelius not the first Gentile Christian-Ethiopian eunuch was

  4. WHAT I BELIEVE • Acts 19 Ephesian disciples don’t fit this view • Acts emphasises individual receiving of the Spirit • OT says all people will receive, not small representative groups • John Baptist says Jesus will baptise in the Spirit all who come to Him • John Apostle in John 737/39 talks of anyone who is thirsty, anyone who believes • Peter says the promise of the Spirit is for you, your children and those who are afar off • Paul says all his readers have been baptised in the Spirit

  5. WHAT I BELIEVE • Pentecost begins the fulfilment of the promise of the Spirit for all who are the Lord’s children • This promise is for you • Have you realised this? • Have you asked the Lord to fill you with the Spirit?
