  5. Methodology: how we defined “strengths” • Definition ①:”Publication” Leadership • “Share” of number of publications by researchers from NCU is relatively high compared to other universities publishing papers in the same research area • Definition ②:”Reference” Leadership • “Share” of citations gained by papers published by researchers from NCU is relatively high compared to other universities publishing papers in the same research area • Definition ③:”State-of-the-Art” Leadership • State-of-the-Art (SOA) helps to measure thought leadership by indicating the “recentness” of articles cited by the institution’s articles within each research area Defined as “Competency” if researchersfrom NCU are#1 or #2 in either of the three definitions in the research area 5

  6. Research Strength and Focus Areas of NCU • NCU isalreadyleadingthesespecificcompetenciesoris on theedge of becomingleader • Most of„interdisciplinarybubbles” do haveblue bar • Chemistry hasthehighestdegreeofinter-disciplinarity and connectsseveralfields such as Medicine, Engineering, Biotechnology • Research Strength • Math&Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Biology/Biotechnology MATH & PHYSICS COMPUTER SCIENCE SOCIAL SCIENCE CHEMISTRY Interdisciplinary Research Areas HUMANITIES BRAIN RESEARCH ENGINEERING EARTH SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE BIOLOGY MEDICINE BIOTECHNOLOGY INFECTIOUS DISEASE

  7. Research Strengths– Torun and Bydgoszcz UMK 65 competencies 43 competencies MATH & PHYSICS COMPUTER SCIENCE SOCIAL SCIENCE CHEMISTRY Interdisciplinary Research Areas HUMANITIES Less competencies in total in the result of shared competencies BRAIN RESEARCH ENGINEERING CM EARTH SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE BIOLOGY MEDICINE BIOTECHNOLOGY INFECTIOUS DISEASE 35 competencies

  8. Article Output per Subject Area • 18.5% of published articles are within Math&Physics, however Math&Physics contribute to 35% of the competency articles • Medicine (Health Sciences, Med. Specialities, Brain Research, Health ciences) contribute 41.2% to publications vs. 22.9% to competencies

  9. Table View of Compentencies • NCU ispublishingheavily and veryrecent in their Research Strength • 20 Research StrengthwithPublicationLeadership, 21 with Innovation Leadership • PublicationImpact in terms of citationsisratherlow(5 Citation Leadership)

  10. Matrix View Question Marks How can we increase our market share in these research areas?  Active “Recruitment” Stars How can we defend our presence in these research areas?  “Retain” key talent Dogs Research areas that are internationally declining with low article share Cash Cows How can we get the highest impact out of these research areas?

  11. Porównanie działalności naukowej UMK z konkurencyjnymi uniwersytetami Sub title

  12. Quantity vs. Quality

  13. Polish publications: Top 12 contributing institutions • NCU contributesto 3.5% of all polisharticles • Citations per Article (CPA) of NCU showsusualpattern of low international collaboration • High degree of international co-authorshipisrelatedwithhighercitationcounts • Strong focus on medicinecorrespondswithhighcitationnumbersas well • 31% of articlesareco-authored international, howeveronly 26% areco-authoredwith Top publishing countries

  14. International Collaboration * International are the Top 11 publishing countries worldwide: United States, United Kingdom, China, Japan, Germany, France, Spain, Canada, Italy, Russia, India

  15. Number and structure of competencies

  16. General numbers • If normalized, in terms of article output NCU is comparable with other universites • Normalization per 100 Researchers shows excellent rate of Competencies in comparison with peers

  17. Growth potential

  18. Conclusions • NCU is publishing heavily and has good recency in terms of referenced papers • However, citation impact is the area for improvement • 2/3 of NCU Competencies are in growing fields (article output increases annually worldwide) • NCU has less competencies than Warsaw and Jagiellonian universities, but normalization per 100 Researchers shows excellent rate of competencies in comparison with peers • Warsaw and Jagiellonian are most prolific and most effective Research Organisations • NCU similar to Wroclaw and AMU in article output, but due to quality of reseach and diversity shows more competencies than both of them
