  2. Learning Objectives • To know the dates of the Baroque period and to name popular Baroque composers • To understand the main features of Baroque music and instruments used • To distinguish between Baroque and other types of music

  3. Starter: What can you see, what can you hear? • Use the worksheet provided to discuss a) What you can see in the picture • b) what you can hear in the piece • Use Muffins to help you describe the piece of music

The Baroque Period • 1600-1750 • The word Baroque was used to describe the ornate and over the top architecture and paintings of the time • This was reflected in the music of the period: It used a lot of ornamented or decorated melody lines • The most well known composers of the time are Bach, Handel, Purcell and Vivaldi

  5. The Baroque period • The orchestra began to take shape in this period. • It consisted mainly of strings • Recorders were starting to be replaced with flutes

  6. Basso Continuo • A key feature of Baroque music was its use of Basso Continuo • The cello or double bass would play the the basic bass line, and the harpsichord or organ would fill out the harmonies • The harpsichord player followed a special type of notation ‘figured bass’

  7. Key features of the Baroque style • Instrumentation • Small developing orchestra • Basso continuo • Dominated by strings • Only 1 percussion instrument • Use of woodwind wasn’t standard and varied from piece to piece

  8. Key features of the Baroque style • Major and Minor tonality • Major/minor key system replaces the old system of modes • Pieces mainly used the diatonic chords of I, IV, V, II and VI • Diatonic: notes or chords belonging to the key

  9. Key features of the Baroque style • Use of different Musical textures • Imitation: a form of musical echoing

  10. Key features of the Baroque style • Terraced Dynamics • Simply ‘loud’ or ‘soft’ with no gradual changes • You wont hear crescendos and diminuendos
