  1. Multi-party systems Why do weonly get two flavors!?

  2. Proportional Representation • In our legislature (_________) we use First-Past-The-Post • Every seat represents a different region • Only one person can win that seat, so different (but related) groups need to pool resources to win it • Ex. Environmentalists, unions, & minority groups team up to help Democrats

  3. Proportional Representation • Many other democracies use (at least some) Proportional Representation • Every party gets a % of seats based on the % of the vote they win • Voters choose a party, not individual candidates • Nobody represents you and your neighborhood 435

  4. Parliamentary System • In the U.S., we vote on our legislators and executive separately • We currently have a divided govt., Democratic president, Republican H of R. • In a parliamentary system, you vote for legislators, they vote for the executive • Makes sure executive (Prime Minister) and legislature (Parliament) are of the same party • Makes passing laws much quicker

  5. Parliamentary System • …But when mixed with proportional representation, parliament systems lead to coalition governments • When multiple parties team up to have more than 50% of the votes because no party has enough on its own • This leads to parties having to compromise on laws, budgets, etc. • What an interesting thought…
