  2. About Encephalitis • Encephalitis is a inflammation of the brain resulting either from a viral infection or when the bodies own immune system mistakenly attacks brain tissue. • It comes about abruptly and usually requires urgent care. • Also known as West Nile virus.

  3. James Goldwhich Background: Age: 27Height: 6’1Weight: 190 Has a girlfriend named Marissa His favorite activities are playing bingo with his grandfather, playing lacrosse, and playing with his pit bull, Theodore. His favorite color is magenta and he has an obsession with rocks. His major in college was Chemistry. He has 3 sisters and 1 brother and grew up in Minnesota.

  4. Symptoms: • Has had an ongoing fever for 2 weeks. • Feels very drowsy and has sporadic headaches. • Has felt very weak and simple tasks he seems to struggle with. • Gets very confused throughout the day and seems to forget important information.

  5. Regions of the brain affected: • The cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord are all affected by Encephalitis.

  6. Diagnosis: • James has been diagnosed with Encephalitis. • To figure this out, we have taken his temperature and it has been at a solid 101 for a week. • We also tested his strength by providing him with a simple task of lifting a five pound weight which he could not complete.

  7. Treatment: • I have suggested that the patient get plenty of bed rest. • Also, the patient should receive many fluids. • The patient should take 2 ibuprofens a day to reduce inflammation of the brain.

  8. Prognosis: • Prognosis for severe encephalitis depends on many factors, including: • Age of the patient -- worse outcomes for infants under age 12 months and adults over age 55 • Immune status • Preexisting neurological conditions • Most cases last 3-5 days and resolve without becoming serious. • Commonly passed off as the common flu.

  9. Error in Communication: • The Motor Cortex is not sending signals to the brain stem to perform its functions.

  10. Biomedical Professionals: • Neurologist: a medical specialist in the nervous system and the disorders affecting it. • Neurologists need a bachelors degree and they must go to medical school. • The neurologist can test what when wrong in the brain. • Physical Therapist: therapist who treats injury or dysfunction with exercises and other physical treatments of the disorder. • A doctoral degree in physical therapy is necessary. • The PT can help regain strength within the patient.
