KEY PROBLEM Multi-resistant organisms (MROs) Methicillin resistant Staph aureus “Golden staph” or MRSA Vancomycin resistant Enterococcus “Hospital superbug” or VRE Cause considerable harm to patients Especially bloodstream infections Very costly to hospitals Increase length of stay Multitude of extra tests and treatment Time consuming for cleaning staff Use of bleach disinfectant Health and safety issues with use of strong smelling bleach

  5. AIM To maximally reduce new acquisitions of antibiotic resistant bacteria at Wollongong Hospital by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of our cleaning services.

  7. KEY CHANGES IMPLEMENTED Three pronged approach Staff-initiated choice of a new cleaning product Introduction of a new cleaning team Closing the loop in action, audit and accountability

  8. FIRST PRONG – NEW PRODUCT • Asked staff to evaluate cleaning products • Must conform with NSW policy (PD2007_034) • TGA Approved. • Less harzardous than previous chemicals • Blind test of existing and 3 new products • Clear winner!

SECOND PRONG – NEW STAFF TEAM • New staff classification • Ward discharge support assistants (Hospital Assistant Grade 2) • Mon-Fri, 2 x 10 hr shifts • Saturday, 2 x 8 hr shifts; Sunday, 1 x 8 hr shift • Spending 124 hours per week solely on terminal cleaning rooms on discharge of MRO patients. • Collaboration with Infection Management and Control Service (IMACS) designated nurse. • Buy in from the Executive, Director of Nursing, Hospital General Manager.

  14. Training provided to all staff including ward staff. • Risk assessment undertaken. • Company representatives flew out from Perth. • I stopped hearing from staff with concerns • Staff survey = 95% (84/88) satisfied with Chlor-Clean. • Increased cleaning of ward bathrooms twice per shift
