  1. The Scarlet Letter Chapter 9

  2. Early chapter Under his new identity of Chillingworth, only Hester Prynne knows who he really is. He swears her to an oath of secrecy. He enters his new society as a doctor, and people learn of his great skill and intelligence in medicine. He is able to treat different diseases and conditions with his knowledge gained from the Indians. In that time doctors are known as “leeches.”

  3. Conflict The people of the town start to realize that their minister, Dimmsdale, seems to be getting sick. He becomes paler and thinner over time, people often notice him clutching his chest in pain. Dimmsdale first declines the treatment by any doctor, because he believed that if he had fallen ill that he was no longer worthy to be on the earth. Chillingworth couldn’t figure out what was ailing Dimmsdale.

  4. Resolution Due to the arrival of Chillingworth at the time of Dimmsdale getting ill, the people of the town believed that Chillingworth was sent, by God, to cure Dimmsdale. Dimmsdale declines Chillingworth’s help, but eventually was convinced by the townspeople to accept the help because they believed it was inappropriate to refuse God’s givings.

  5. Relationship Chillingworth and Dimmsdale become friends from all the time spent together. Both men are of great intelligence and high statute. They often discuss societal and political issues amongst their town. But rumors start to arise due to their newfound relationship.

  6. Rumors Due to Chillingworth’s secret past, rumors surface about him. Because of his new and radical practices of medicine. The townspeople rumored that Chillingworth himself was possessed by Satan or Satan’s emissary, because of his previous practice of the black arts. Over time Chillingworth’s face starts to resemble something ugly and evil.

  7. The End…of this chapter.
