Nouns • Noun- a word or word group that is used to name a person, place, thing, or idea. • Common- names any one of a group of persons, places, things, or ideas and is generally not capitalized. • Proper- names a particular person, place, thing, or idea and is usually capitalized. • Concrete- names a person, or thing that can be perceived by one or more of the senses. • Abstract- names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic.

  3. Noun Examples • Common: scientist, woman, city. • Proper: Breion, Sharia, Tarell, Iowa. • Concrete: cloud, poison ivy, yogurt. • Abstract: freedom, beauty, kindness.

  4. Pronouns • Pronoun- a word that is used in place of one or more nouns or pronouns. • Antecedents- the word that the pronoun refers to. • Personal- refers to the one speaking. • Demonstrative- used to point out a specific person, place, thing, or idea. • Interrogative- introduces a question.

  5. Pronoun Examples. • Antecedents: In about A.D. 1150 , a historian wrote down a strange tale English villagers had told. Him- historian. • Personal: they, your, our, she, he, us. • Demonstrative: this, that, these, those. • Interrogative: who, whom, which, what, whose.

  6. Adjectives • A word that is used to modify a noun or a pronoun. • Demonstrative- when an adjective modifies nouns or pronouns. • Articles- a, an, the. • Pronoun or Adjective… ex: I like that. -pronoun. ex: I like that shirt. -adjective.

  7. Adjective Examples • Demonstrative: this, that, these, those. • Adjective what kind? – grey, Irish, lowest. Which one? – either, one, fewer. how many? – five, one, some.

  8. Verbs • Verb- a word that is used to express action or a state of being. • Helping verbs- helps the main verb express action or a state being. • Action- run, catch, fight, throw • Non-action- think, believe, know

  9. Verb Examples • Verb- running, jogging, walking. • Helping verbs- is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been, has, have had, do, does, did, may, might, must, can, could, will, would, shall, should.

  10. Adverbs • Adverbs- modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. • Adverbs modify verbs- where, when, how, to what extent. • Adverbs modifying adjectives-adverbs do this by telling how fast something goes or how colorful something is. • Adverbs modifying adverbs- saying how or what the adverb modifies a word or word group.

  11. Prepositions • Preposition- is a word that shows the relationship of a noun or a pronoun another word. • Commonly Used Prepositions after, at, on, under, over, inside, among, beside, near, off. • Compound Prepositions according to, because of, in addition to, next to, in front of.

  12. Conjunctions • Conjunction- is a word that joins words or word groups. • Coordinating- joins words or word groups that are used in the same way. • Correlative- are pairs of conjunctions that joins words or word groups that are used in the same way.

  13. Conjunction Examples • Coordinating- for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.(F.A.N.B.O.Y.S) • Correlative-both…and, either…or, not only…but also.

  14. Interjections • Interjection- a word that expresses emotion. • Interjection examples: Wow! What? Ah, Boy-Oh-Boy! Yippee! Hey, Well…
