  1. Today's Message Beating Boasters With Boasting II Cor. 11:5-21 Part one

  2. The False Apostles They built on Paul’s foundation 10:16 They were boasters and self exalting 10:17,18 Brentwood Park Brentwood Park They preached a different Jesus/gospel They were dynamic speakers 11:6 They were deceitful workers 11:13 They were bullies – 11:20

  3. The Apostle Paul He never built on another man’s foundation 10:16 He only boasted in the Lord 10:17 He preached the true Jesus/Gospel 10:16 He was dynamic in true knowledge not speech 11:6 He lowered himself to build up the saints 11:7

  4. Paul’s boasting didn’t come from his personal abilities in the flesh But I do not think I am in the least inferior to those super-apostles." I may not be a trained speaker, 11:6a

  5. Beware – Of super apostles False apostles are rising up in New Zealand, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and in other countries. They are restoring the 5-fold anointing They desire to dominate the society They desire to subjugate the churches They promote a false apostolic ministry They do not follow Paul’s example They are self promoters who see wealth and power as important goals Congregants must sign covenants of obedience

  6. 1. Paul’s boasting came from His knowledge ...but I do have knowledge. We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way. 11:6b

  7. Paul’s knowledge: Was of God – the right source I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. 12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ. Gal 1:11,12 Was of the truth – the right info For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance I Cor. 15:3

  8. 2. Paul’s boasting was used as a last resort Was it a sin for me to humble myself in order to exalt you by preaching the gospel of God to you free of charge? II Cor. 11:7

  9. 3. Paul’s boasting came from undeniable facts I took money from other churches, receiving wages of them, to do you service And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brethren who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed. I have kept myself from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue to do so. Vs. 8,9

  10. 4. Paul’s boasting came from a heart of love As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, nobody in the regions of Achaia will stop this boasting of mine. 11 Why? Because I do not love you? God knows! vs. 10,11

  11. 5. Paul boasted so those commending themselves would have no ground to stand on And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. V. 12

  12. 6. Paul boasted because he wanted to expose the sinful boasters for what they were. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. v.13

  13. How do you expose false apostles? There were more than 12 apostles Salute Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen, and my fellowprisoners, who are of note among the apostles , who also were in Christ before me. Rom. 15:7 Don't we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord's brothers and Cephas? I Cor. 9:7

  14. 1. Put them to the test they must have proper credentials I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. Rev. 2:2 a. They had to have seen the risen Jesus Am I not an apostle ? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? I Cor. 9:1

  15. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection... Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles Acts 1:22 2) They must have the signs of an apostle The things that mark an apostle --signs, wonders and miracles--were done among you with great perseverance. II Cor. 12:12

  16. And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people Acts 5:12 3. They had to be personally commissioned by Jesus Paul, an apostle , not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ Gal. 1:1

  17. The super apostles were false apostles a. Paul uses this as an occasion to expose the false apostles’ mentor and daddy And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve. Vs. 14,15

  18. 7. Paul boasted because he knew the Corinthians put up with fools I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool. But if you do, then receive me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting. 17 In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would, but as a fool. 18 Since many are boasting in the way the world does, I too will boast. 19 You gladly put up with fools since you are so wise! 16-19

  19. Note - Paul calls the false apostles fools Bible epistle name calling Fools Dogs Evil workers Wolves Twice dead Clouds with no water Liars Self-willed Despisers of authority Enticers of unstable souls Wells without water The list goes on and on….

  20. a. The Corinthians allowed these fools to be abusive In fact, you even put up with anyone who puts you in bondage or devours you or exalts himself or slaps you in the face. v. 20 The worse kind of deceiver is the one not so easily spotted. But if one places truth above all the outward trappings, the false will come rising to the top.

  21. The abuse manifested in four ways: Legalism They brought them into bondage Authority Fear Control They devoured them Miracle water, paper prayer rugs, Holy Ghost this and that, holy hankies, cheap trinkets and divine blessings for greenback offerings

  22. They exalted themselves I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes , who loves to be first, will have nothing to do with us. 10 So if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, gossiping maliciously about us. Not satisfied with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers. He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church. 3Jn 1:9,10

  23. They bullied the Corinthians Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. I Pet. 5:2,3

  24. b. Paul didn’t have that kind of behavior in him To my shame I admit that we were too weak for that! v. 21 a c. Paul hated to speak on such a level as the false apostles What anyone else dares to boast about--I am speaking as a fool--I also dare to boast about v. 21 b

  25. Signs of a true minister Preaches true Jesus and Gospel Godly jealousy over the flock Humble not authoritative Seeks the people’s benefit Leads the people to freedom Places true knowledge over ability Loves the people His confidence comes from genuine identity and the call of God
