  3. Fabulous Las Vegas • LAS VEGAS IS SPANISH FOR THE MEADOWS, BECAUSE IT WAS SO GREEN. • 1855 - THE FIRST SETTLERS ARRIVED. THEY WERE MORMON, AND THEIR FORT IS STILL THERE! • LAS VEGAS BECAME AN OFFICAL CITY IN 1905. • THE FIRST RESORT/CASINO WAS FOUNDED BY A MOBSTER KNOW AS BUGSY SIEGEL • POPULATION IS AROUND 2 MILLION • LAS VEGAS IS KNOWN AS A PARTY AND GAMBLING TOWN. • FUN FACT: THE KILLERS, IMGAINE DRAGONS,& NEYO

SOCIAL CAPITAL MY NIEGHBOR HOOD • AROUND 80% OF THE FAMILIES IN MY AREA WERE CONSIDERED LOW INCOME • LACK OF NETWORKING BETWEEN THE LOCAL POPULATION, POLICE, SCHOOLS, AND GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES. • HIGH CRIME RATE… STORY TIME • LARGE DIVERSITY, HOWEVER PEOPLE KEPT TO THEIR OWN RACES, UNLESS YOU WERE MIXED, THEN EVERY ONE HATED YOU • HAD, AND STILL HAS, THE HIGHEST DROP OUT RATE IN THE COUNTRY

The economic capitallack there of • ONE OF THE HIGHEST UNEMPLOYMENT RATES IN THE COUNTRY- 8.9% • 47% OF THE JOBS ARE SUPPORTED BY TOURISM (MGM RESORTS HAS 54,250 EMPLOYEES) • SECOND WOULD BE WAL-MART • CONSTRUCTION WAS BIG MONEY UNTIL THE BUBBLE POPPED • MEDIAN HOUSE HOLD INCOME IS AROUND $50,000 • NEVADA - NUMBER ONE IN IN FORECLOSURES IN THE COUNTRY, HIGHEST % COMING OUT OF LAS VEGAS

Natural CapitalWhat, there's nature in Vegas???? • LAKE MEAD - IT’S ONE OF THE LARGEST MAN MADE LAKES • VALLEY OF FIRE - NAMED AFTER THE RED SAND STONE, AWESOME CAMPING • RED ROCK CANYON - AWESOME ROCK CLIMBING • MT. CHARLESTON - IT’S THE END OF THE ROCKY’S AND A HIKE TO THE TOP TO SEE ALL OF VEGAS.

NO! • THERE WAS NO COMMUNTION GOING ON OUTSIDE THE NIEGHBOR HOOD • CONVERSATIONS ABOUT GANGS, DRUGS, B&E’S AND WHO GOT SHOT • WHY WE COULDN’T GO ON THE STRIP AFTER NINE • NO WAY IS THIS PLACE IS GOING TO BECOME A FAMILY TOWN • I GOT A JOB AT STRIP CLUB OR CONSTRUCTION SITE … SO I’M GOING TO DROP OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL (YES IT WORKED BOTH WAYS)… SLANGING ROCK WAS A GOOD SOURCE OF EMPLOYMENT

AccountabilityI never learned how to count • LAS VEGAS IS – 14TH SAFEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY (100 IS THE SAFEST) • LAST YEAR THERE WERE 4,720 VIOLENT AND 18,970 PROPERTY CRIMES • 1 IN 124 BECOMING A VICTIM • PAST FEW YEARS THE COPS WILL SHOOT YOU • SEVERE LACK OF HUMAN SERVICE TYPE ORGANIZATIONS • NEVADA TOOK THE 47-51 (THE LOWEST IN COUNTRY) FOR EDUCATION STANDARDS

  9. Block Concepts CHOOSING FREEDOM WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS STAYS IN VEGAS NOT ME, I HAPPENED IN VEGAS AND I GOT THE HECK OUT!!! LEARNING FROM ONE ANOTHER I LEARNED FROM THE ONES AROUND ME THAT I DID NOT WANT TO BE PART OF THE SYSTEM THAT IS VEGAS. I WANTED TO MAKE SURE MY FUTURE FAMILY WOULD HAVE A BETTER LIFE THEN I DID.

  11. u.s.m.c.What makes the grass grow?! • STARTED UP IN A BAR IN 1776 • IT IS A DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY (MEN'S DEPARTMENT) • HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN EVERY CONFLICT INVOLVING AMERICA • IS KNOW AS THE 911 FORCE • SMALLEST BRANCH • I JOINED AT 17 • SPENT FIVE YEARS IN THE INFANTRY, SNIPER PLATOON, AND MP’S • STATIONED IN HAWAII • DEPLOYED TO 7 COUNTRIES BY THE TIME I WAS 22

SOCIAL CAPITALWHEN YOU’RE IN YOUR’RE IN • IT’S VERY DIVERSE • ALL KINDS OF RACES, RELIGIONS, AND CREEDS HAPPENING • MIXTURE OF SOCIAL CLASSES… WELL NOT TO MANY RICH FOLK, BUT WE HAVE SOME • STRONG SENSE OF NETWORKING ACROSS THE RANKS AND AS VETERANS • ONCE YOU BECOME A MARINE YOU ARE ONE FOR LIFE (I HAVE A NEW FAMILY NOW) • WE STILL HAVE EACH OTHERS BACKS, EVEN WHEN WE ARE OUT

  17. HISTORYIF MY BOYS COULD SEE ME NOW • Used to be the Pig farm (it only had horses) • Houses started being built around 30 years ago • My house was built in the 90’s • We moved in last year • Used my VA home loan to get the house

  18. Social capitalmiddle class is a trip • Social capital is really important in the neighborhood • Health of the community is important • Great relationships between the majority the neighbors • Safety is high priority • A lot of networking going on • Very cohesive neighborhood
