  1. Welcome to e-Learning Lab (eLL)e-Learning Lab – history and current research activities: Thomas Ryberg PhD student at the doctoral school of Human Centered Informatics e-Learning Lab - Department of Communication ryberg@hum.aau.dk http://www.ell.aau.dk http://www.kommunikation.aau.dk http://www.hci.hum.aau.dk

  2. e-Learning Lab – history and current activities: • E-learning lab was a part of the ”ViLL” project (Virtual learning environments and modes of learning). ViLL ended December 2003. • ”ViLL” a project within a larger regional project: ”The Digital North Denmark” • Overall objectives of ViLL • Research into and experiments with ICT and learning • Contribute to building and sustaining ICT relevant competences in Northern Jutland • Flexible learning methods to support long life learning

  3. e-Learning Lab – history and current activities: • ViLL consisted of two parts: • Different educational experiments (primarily at the university) • Establishing an E-Learning Lab • E-Learning Lab’s objectives: • To identify, develop and test new virtual modes of learning and ICT systems for learning • Evaluate and test learning system in relation to pedagogical and organizational challenges

  4. e-Learning Lab – history and current activities: • Four main activities in ELL: • Facilitating experiments with new technologies • Pedagogical and technical consultancy in relation to educational experiments • Facilitating knowledge sharing among different stakeholders in various projects • Research alongside developing systems and methods, that integrate lab-work with users’ experiences and the newest knowledge within the research field of ICT and learning • This is accomplished at many different levels and contexts – both local, regional, national and international, through different types of activities

  5. An overview Research in action – experiments with technology Research networks Research Projects: ICT for development All Guided by Research themes Research Projects: Institutional and work place developmental research Doctoral school, Human centered informatics, MIL publications, trad. research

  6. e-Learning Lab – research and projects: Overarching research approach and methodology • Action research – participation in concrete projects and development activities • Theoretical reflections grounded in practical experiments • Dialogical research methods – developing frameworks and methods in collaboration with project partners through active experimentation Learning and pedagogical approach • Action oriented learning – learning through engagement in real settings (how to facilitate in VLE) • Problem oriented learning – ownership of the problem – student or teacher? • Collaborative learning – group work, dialogue, learning as construction of meaning and concrete production • Learning as engagement with real world problems through empirical investigations, problem solving and defining the problem

  7. e-Learning Lab – research and projects: Some research themes: • Taking ICT into use (organizational and pedagogical challenges) • Developing methods for design of VLE’s • Developing theories on ICT, learning and design • Design of Virtual Learning Environments according to different pedagogical approaches • Research into and design of productive networked learning environments • Assessing Virtual Learning Environments • Improvement of virtual management

  8. e-Learning Lab – research and projects: General activities: • Close connections to doctoral school on “Human Centred Informatics” – research seminars • Close connections to Human Centred Informatics – especially the BA/MA – Human Centred Informatics • Close connections to Master in ICT and Learning (MIL) • Publications: Contributing with articles, books, web portals etc. to various research fields: CSCL, CSCW, Participatory Design • Arranging Workshops and seminars for various groups – local university people, business sector, regional and national networks • Video-conferencing • Streaming Video – Doctoral students, Doctors, Seminars, Standard lectures (examples at: http://www.kommunikation.aau.dk/video/index.html)

  9. e-Learning Lab – research and projects: Research in action – experiments with technology: • Partly lab-experiments, partly as tools in the different types of projects: • Synchronous communication – chat, web cam, 3D worlds, video conferences, virtual classrooms • Asynchronous communication – forums, file spaces, discussion boards, video lectures. • Experimenting and evaluating Virtual Learning Environments: (Quickplace, Virtual-U, First Class, Centra, Fronter, Moodle, Atutor, Claroline) • Streaming video – Non-interactive videos, interaction with PowerPoint slides

  10. e-Learning Lab – research and projects: • Research networks: • EQUEL (Collaboration with Göteborg) • Kaleidoscope (Collaboration with Göteborg) • JEIRP – Conditions for productive learning in network learning environments • ERT – Conditions for productive networked learning environments • Telepeers • Network for ICT and learning • CSCL-community • CSCW

  11. e-Learning Lab – research and projects: Research projects – ICT for development: • VISCA (Virtual Learning and Sustainable Development in Central America) • VO@NET (Virtual Open-Access Network for Education and Training) • ELAC (European and Latin American Consortium for Information-Society-Technology Enhanced Continued Education in Environmental Management and Planning) • MVU (Mediterranean Virtual University) • AUW (Asian University for Women) • PUT – Power Users of Technology • (Networks for development) U-nexus, AUDREP

  12. e-Learning Lab – research and projects: Research projects – University Developmental Research • ViLL(Virtual Learning Environments and Modes of Learning) • Flexnet(Flexible Networked learning) • ELP (Experimental Lab for Production [at Center for Industrial Production]) • Telepeers/Taconet (Technology Enhanced Learning Environments) • ILET (International Leadership for Educational Technology) Workplace related developmental research • Workplace Learning • Learn@Work • Knowledge Management at AMU schools
