  1. Encounters in East Asia Interaction with Europe – Strict limits were placed on all European traders because products were considered inferior and merchants were not trusted. Matteo Ricci – Jesuit priest made a favorable impression on Ming China – China became interested with Renaissance accomplishments.

  2. Encounters in East Asia The Manchu Conquest – 1644 – Manchu armies conquered the old MingDynasty and established the QingDynasty. This dynasty preserved Manchu culture by barring intermarriage and prohibiting the practice of footbinding. Later, some Chinese features such as: Confucianism Government – 1 Chinese Official & 1 Manchu Official

Encounters in East Asia The Manchu Conquest – Kangxi (1661-1722) & Qianlong (1736-1796) were two Manchu rulers who extended China’s borders, promoted Chinese culture, expanded trade, promoted population growth, and spread peace. Maintained the Ming policy of restricting foreign traders Rejected Great Britain’s request for trading rights (This later proved to be problematic).

  4. Encounters in East Asia Korea – Restricted outside contact Adopted Confucian ideas Turned inward because of Japanese and Manchu invaders Known as the “Hermit Kingdom”

  5. Encounters in East Asia Japan – Initially adopted European ways Weapons, Castles, Christianity Tokugawa shoguns became hostile towards foreigners and Japanese Christians Eventually ended foreign trade and barred Western merchants.
