  1. welcome LOOKING A BRIEF GUIDE TO HINDU FUNERALS & THE DEATH RITUALS THEY FOLLOW

  2. With almost a billion followers across the globe, Hinduism is the 3rdlargest religions in the earth. The Hindu religion originated in India, but at present there’re several denominations across the globe, each with slightly different customs & beliefs.

  3. THIS IS OUR GUIDE TO HINDU FUNERALS & THE DEATH RITUALS THEY FOLLOW: WHY DO HINDU CREMATE? After decease, Hindus believe that the physical body serves no purpose, and this doesn’t need to be preserved. They choose to cremate the body of their loved ones as they believe it is the fastest way to release the soul & aid with rebirth. WHAT HAPPENS AT A HINDU FUNERAL? The casket is carried into the crematorium, feet first, while mourners chant prayers. An open casket displays the dead, and guests are expected to view the body. A Hindu priest & senior family members conduct the cremation ceremony (‘mukhagni’). Customarily, the mukhagni is only attended by men, however, modern Hindu funerals allow women to attend. The day after a Hindu funeral, the ashes are dispersed over a holy body of water or a place of importance to the dead.

  4. WHAT TO WEAR TO A HINDU FUNERAL? Unlike other religions, black is known to be inappropriate to attend a Hindu funeral. Instead, the mourners should dress in white. What to bring to a Hindu funeral? It’s not common to bring flowers or gifts to the Hindu funeral, instead, they should be given to the family before the ceremony. Food is also not part of Hindu tradition. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A HINDU FUNERAL? Customarily, the Hindu grief period varies from ten to thirty days. During this time period, households may display a photo of their loved one, decorated with a circlet of flowers, somewhere in their home. On the thirteenth day of mourning, it is common for the grieving family to organize a ceremony where they do rituals to help release the soul of the dead for re-birth. Furthermore, on the 1st anniversary of the dead, the family host a memorial event that respects the life of their loved one.

  5. As with other religions, Hindu funeral rites & customs differ to match the needs & preferences of each individual religious sect and each family. Need help with your Hindu Funeral in Tooting?
