  3.  Your task • Study the information on Emmett Till & Autherine Lucy on p.61 and list the reasons why these two cases are so significant. Emmett Till with his mother Autherine Lucy with Thurgood Marshall

  4. Significance of Till & Lucy cases • Media interest – trial & funeral of Till with open casket; expulsion of 1st black student • Legal prosecution - 1st time whites had been accused of murder of a black; Lucy to Alabama University to federal court • Lack of presidential intervention - President Eisenhower didn’t comment on either case, in contrast with Truman

  5.  Your task • Read p.62 and note down what was helping civil rights advance and what was limiting them Students at Alabama University, burning desegregation literature

  6. Help & hindrance • Presidential interventions – e.g. Truman, e.g. ‘To Secure These Rights’ (1947) • Key legal rulings against segregation in housing, interstate railroads and education, e.g. Brown (1954) & Brown II (1955) • Supreme court support, e.g. Earl Warren • Growth of NAACP • Key individuals, e.g. Lucy & Rosa Parks • BUT lack of Congressional support & lack of support from Eisenhower

  7. Study the events and impact of Brown (1954 & 5), Montgomery Bus Boycott (1956) & Little Rock (1957) (p.63-66 & 69-71). What similarities & differences do you notice between the cases?

  8.  Extension task • Conduct some further research on Rosa Parks. Read p. 66-8 and list reasons why she is the best remembered female campaigner in the civil rights movement. Does she deserve this title?

  9.  Plenary • What was significant about the Emmett Till and Autherine Lucy cases? • Give 3 similarities & 3 differences between the early landmark test cases of the civil rights movement.

  10.  Homework • Study p.56-62 & p. 70-6 and complete a scales chart weighing up evidence that Eisenhower took positive steps to advance civil rights and evidence he did little. • What factors influenced Eisenhower’s decisions?
