  1. Turnarounds & Majors • Newsletter • Ursa Major . the Bear Facts April 25/14 DAY 1 ADOPT A SAFE ATTITUDE A safe attitude doesn't just happen. It has to be learned and practiced. Although humans instinctively seek to avoid pain and death, they often behave in ways that are self-destructive and threaten their very existence. It's often called the “John Wayne Attitude”, and can be translated into 'It can't happen to me.' The “John Wayne’s” don't communicate much, thinking they're tough enough, strong enough and smart enough to do the job alone. In most operations, unsafe environmental conditions or mechanical failures are easier to control than human behavior. Some workers ignore the dangers they have been warned about, while others take heed. Some workers have difficulty keeping their minds on the task at hand, while others are always focused. Often, the difference is a matter of attitude. And often a change in attitude comes about the hard way. Experience can be a great way to learn safe behavior, but too often it involves injury or even death. Don't be a 'John Wayne.' It's not worth the risk or the grief. A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY Everyone has a responsibility to protect themselves, fellow workers, the public and the environment. This means becoming an active participant in the company's safety program; not just a bystander. It means following safety standards and safe work procedures. It means prompt reporting of potential hazards, accidents, incidents, injuries and illnesses. Adopt and maintain a safe attitude. . . QUOTE OF THE DAY Attitude, more than aptitude, may determine your altitude on the ladder of success. . Fort McMurray
