EQAL Strand 3 • Aims to: • raise student satisfaction, engagement and success by providing a more seamless and personalised online experience of university activity • By: • delivering a new, integrated VLE & supporting tools • enhancing the student portal • enhancing staff digital literacy to take full advantage of these tools http://www.blogs.mmu.ac.uk/eqal/C47/

New, integrated VLE | policies • Moodle areas created automatically from QLS • every Unit Occurrence; every Programme; every Faculty; • university-wide Student Support Area; and • on request Departmental Areas • Core Moodle toolset • Threshold standards for Programme and Unit Areas: • information from QLS on Unit details, leader + hand-ins • information from Scientia on Unit timetable • information from Aspire on Unit reading list • normally organised as weekly teaching schedule • Moodle User Group

New, integrated VLE | timeframe WebCT (VLE 10/11)  Moodle (VLE 11/12) • Jul 2010 WebCT areas created for 2010/11 • Aug 2010 Moodle policy agreed; hosting contracts signed • Sep 2010 Moodle integrated with MMU systems • Oct 2010 Moodle areas created for Jan 2011+ starters • Jan 2011 Moodle available for Jan 2011+ starters • Mar 2011 Moodle areas created for all Units & Progs • Aug 2011 WebCT switched off • Sep 2011 Moodle available to all students

New, integrated VLE | summary Switching from WebCT to Moodle during 2010/11 • More consistent, systems-driven approach • Auto-populated with data in core corporate systems • QLS: curriculum, enrolments, assessment, hand-ins • Scientia: timetable • Aspire: reading lists • Supported by HR ODTD+CeLT –coordinated staff development cascaded through local champions + reinforced by online materials

Staff Training & Support | approach • Cascade model supported by CeLT + ODTD • Each faculty to nominate champions • ODTD producing “person spec” • Support delivered in-faculty by champions • Session plans and resources produced centrally • Initial “train the trainer” sessions to champions • + LRT + CeLT + ICTS + SAS • Online support resource in Moodle • “how do I – why should I ?”
